Japan is an archipelago stretching a total of 3,500 kilometers from northeast to southwest. Tokyo, located nearly in the middle of the archipelago, lies at 140 degrees east in longitude and 36 degrees north in latitude. The latitude of Tokyo is about the same as that of North Carolina in the United States, that of Tsingtao in China, and that of the south of Italy. London is located further north than the northern end of Japan.
