過去形の肯定文では could を一般的な能力に使います。
例えば、
When I was in high school, I could run very fast.
私が高校生のとき、私はとても速く走ることができた。
肯定文で、一回だけの特定されたことだったら、was able to do または managed to do を使います。
例えば、
Yesterday I was in condition so I was able to run very fast in the race at the company picnic.
昨日は体調が良かったので、会社のピクニックの競走でとても速く走ることができた。
was able to do は一般的な能力にも使えます。
例えば、
When I was in high school, I was able to run very fast.
この例文だと、could も was able to もどちらでもいいです。
managed to do は一回だけの特定されたことだけで、難しかったけど何とか出来た、やり遂げた、という意味になります。
例えば、
Yesterday I wasn't feeling well but I still managed to run very fast in the race at the company picnic.
昨日は体調が良くなかったが、それでも会社のピクニックの競走でとても速く走ることに成功した。

営業部は、予算削減と人員不足にもかかわらず、四半期の目標を達成することに成功した。

Could の例外
肯定文で、一回だけの特定されたことだったら、could を使えないが、否定形なら使えます。
例えば、
Yesterday I wasn't feeling well so I couldn't run very fast in the race at the company picnic.
昨日は体調が良くなかったので、会社のピクニックの競走であまり速く走れなかった。
そして、知覚動詞も例外です。
例えば、
see → I could see the mountains clearly from my hotel window yesterday.
昨日、ホテルの窓から山々をはっきりと見ることができた。
hear → I could hear the speaker despite the noisy crowd.
騒がしい群衆にもかかわらず、演説者の声を聞くことができた。
understand → I could understand most of what the professor explained in class.
授業で教授が説明したことのほとんどを理解することができた。
smell → I could smell the flowers when I entered the garden.
庭に入ったとき、花の香りを嗅ぐことができた。
