まず空白の前の appears がカギです。appear は省略された (to be) と一緒に使われることが多いです。SVC と同じ構造になります。(to be)が省略されているので名詞か形容詞が入ります。Be動詞の後は副詞だけでは完結しないのでB.の副詞が消えます。Be動詞＋名詞はイコールという意味になるのでD.も消えます。software と efficiency は同じものではないからです。C.は意味的に合いません。
(to be) が省略されて SVC の形でよくTOEICテストに出てくるのは appear と seem です。両方とも（～のように見える）という意味です。 例えば、
