Cold, sweet drinks are popular in Thailand’s hot climate. But concerns are growing about health risks from excessive sugar consumption. This has prompted the country to try to change people’s habits.
The Ministry of Public Health says Thais consume an average of 21 teaspoons of sugar a day. That’s more than three times the amount suggested by the World Health Organization.
The government responded by revising guidelines for restaurants and cafes. Standards issued in February cut the recommended amount of sugar in iced coffee from seven teaspoons per serving to three.
Compliance is voluntary. But this coffee shop now offers drinks with half the sugar they once contained.
“At first, it tasted a bit different, but I got used to it.”
The trend is now spreading across Southeast Asia. Singapore has made sugar-content labeling mandatory for beverages served at food outlets. Vietnam plans to introduce a tax on high-sugar drinks next year.
