2026.5.26(4.29) UAEがOPEC脱退へ UAE TO LEAVE OPEC

The United Arab Emirates will reportedly withdraw from the group of major oil-producing nations known as OPEC. State-run media says it will leave on May 1.
The report says the UAE will also withdraw from the wider alliance known as OPEC+. It says the decision will enhance its ability to respond to “evolving market demands.” And it says the country will “gradually and carefully” increase production.
OPEC was formed in 1960 to complete with Western oil companies. It has 12 members. OPEC+ includes countries like Russia and Mexico. The groups provide security and stability to the energy market. Western media reports say the departure follows years of frustration with other members. They say the issues include oil production policy and the response to the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran. Bloomberg says the withdraw will be a significant loss to OPEC and make it “structurally weaker.”

T: So, 二村さん, what do you think the UAE is trying to do here?
N: The UAE's departure could be part of its effort to promote industries, like AI and defense in preparation for a post-oil era. Since that requires massive funding, it is believed that the country 👂wants to export oil without being constrained by OPEC.
T: Hm, well, I just hope the move doesn’t make the oil situation too problematic.
