Japan will deploy an anti-ship missile system to the country's easternmost island for the first time. The deployment will take place as early as June. It’s the latest move by the country to boost its Pacific defenses.
Minamitorishima Island is located about 2,000 kilometers southeast of Honshu. The defense ministry plans to build a firing range on the island for the Ground Self-Defense Force's Type–12 surface–to–ship missiles. These have a range of over 100 kilometers. The deployment would include a launcher, mid-sized drones used to pinpoint targets, and a system to gather and analyze radio waves emitted by vessels. The missiles themselves will not be part of the deployment.
The ministry plans to use the equipment to confirm whether the system can function normally on the island.
