"Ferney: A beautifully written time-slip novel (English Edition)" by James Longを読んで気になった単語。GallyとMikeはロンドン郊外に家を探していていましたが、なかなか見つからず。でも、ふと立ち寄ったPenselwoodという町はずれで見つけた古い今にも倒れそうな家をGallyが気に入り、その家の持ち主であるMullard夫人との家の売買についてお話するという内容のところです。
Ramshackle - 『今にも倒れそうな、ぐらぐらの』と言う意味。なんとなく、前後の内容、また、単語の音からして、そういう感じの意味かな
、と思いましたが、とりあえず、調べてみました。『ちょっと他の家々からは離れたところにあるもう今にも倒れそうな家』という感じですね。

Gnaled - 『（木の幹などが）ふしだらけの、）(手や指などが）ふしくれだった』
Mrs Mullard was an old vixen, an English gentlewoman gone wild, as gnarled as a briar root, and she didn't miss a trick. ("Ferney" by James Long. page. 22. line.18)
『Mullard婦人は年老いた女狐のような、イバラの茂みのようにふしくれだった感じで、イギリスの貴婦人が少々ワイルドになった感じの風貌であった。そして、彼女はその期待を裏切らなかった。』と言う感じでしょうか。『Miss a trick』というのはイデオムで、『to miss an opportunity or chance』と言う意味。なので、『期待を裏切らない、その通りの人だった』と言う意味かなと思いました。
Creased up - 『（ズボンなどに）折り目をつける、しわしわにする』それから、イギリスの俗語で『大笑いさせる、する』と言う意味。下記では、前後の意味から、『大笑いする』ってことかな。『Mullad婦人の顔はゆっくりと笑い顔になった。』と言う感じ。
Mrs Mullard's face slowly creased up, she bent further and further forwards until he was looking at the thin crown of her head and she began to wheeze. He watched in alarm and then a gout of laughter burst out of her and another and another, an altogether too powerful physical experience for her ancient, tiny frame, as dangerous as boiling tar in a porcelain cup.
