Art was everywhere, from the Miami Beach Convention Center, along South Beach, to the Design District, Midtown, and Wynwood.Color, contrast, mixed media, performance-art presented in galleries, showrooms and large exhibition tents concentrated within a 5 mile radius of downtown Miami. This is an opportunity for artists and designers to present their collections. There were dozens of curated exhibitions; Scope, Art Asia, Overture, Untitled,Red Dot to name a few.
The Design district was overflowing with people attending the opening night parties. Contemporary lighting designs were featured in many showrooms from well know designers and up and coming designers. Exciting lighting from Phillippe Stark, Francisco Gomez Paz, Theirry Gaugain, Dirk Winkle, Markus Jens, and first time exhibitor New York based RUX design. Many of these products were prototypes not yet available on the market, but the inspiration they ignited will be useful on my upcomingbuying trip next month. I will look for similar details in color, materials, and technology in products that will be introduced by thethat we work with,that can take new ideas and produce them in large quantities more economically than the one of a kinds I saw in Miami.

In addition to the cocktail parties, permanentshowroom exhibits, temporary exhibits and art walks, I think the best example of the impact of Art Basel on Contemporary lighting would be that mixing different styles from different cultures can compliment and blend together to tell a beautiful story. I had a business meeting at Paramount Bay, one of Miamis premier high-rise condominiums overlooking Biscayne Bay. The design of the public spaces, by musician and designer Lenny Kravitz, are a combination ofwarm natural elements from Brazil (circa 1972) mixed with contemporary lighting from Italy (circa 2012), set in the tropical paradise of Miami. a number of oversized Hope contemporary lighting fixtures by Milan based designerAfter my meeting, I sat in the lobby for an hour just taking it all in.Lighting can be an accent that coordinates with the decor, harmonizes with it, matches every element or is a contrast that just works.
