When feudal lords went to Edo and returned to their own regions, they marched in processions like a festival parade.

They needed to show off their wealth and power to the people. They wore nice clothes and walked in good order.

On the other hand, they needed to save the cost of the trips. Therefore, they marched in procession in their own regions, near post towns, and when they entered Edo, because many people paid attention in these areas.  When they walked deserted spots, they reduced the number of attendants and walked very fast.
