息子が住むフロリダ州のタンパベイのコンドから川から海に続く
散歩道があるのですが、川に出るまでの道をちょっと変えてみました。
川に出るまでにはベンチが置いてあり、ちょっと休むことができます。
良い景色を見ながら、休むことができるので、とてもいのですが、
時々数人のホームレスと思しき人が座っています。そこで私は、
散歩に出る際に、残り物にプラスチックのフォークとナイフをつけて、
ベンチの上に置くことにしました。そうすればホームレスの人が来た時に、
食べるだろうと思ったのです。
ところが、です。私が食べ物の箱をベンチに置くと、いつも、リスが
やって来て、巧みに箱を口で開け、まあ、少量ですが、食べ物を失敬、
です。そして、木の下に隠したり、木に登って行ってしまいます。
可愛いなどと思わないこと。リスはネズミと同じで、ウイルス病原体
を持っているそうです。でも、その仕草が可愛いので、見ているぶん
にはよいでしょう。鑑賞のみ、です。

英語編です。
My son lives in Tampa Bay, Florida, and when I visit him, I love going for walks along
a path that follows the river all the way to the ocean. Walking there has become one of
my favorite parts of the day. Recently, though, I decided to change my usual route just a little.
The new path has benches scattered along the way, which I appreciate because I can sit down
and rest whenever I feel tired. As I walk, I sometimes see homeless people resting there too.
Seeing them made me think, so I started leaving our leftovers in a small box with
a plastic fork and spoon.
But almost as soon as I set the food down on a bench, a squirrel shows up. It opens the box
amazingly fast and runs off, either hiding under a tree or climbing high into one before I can react.
Some people might think this is cute, but I don’t. Squirrels belong to the same family as mice,
and they can carry the same viruses. If you think squirrels are cute, it’s best to enjoy them
from a distance—just by watching.
