京都市には、お寺や神社はどれくらいあるのでしょう？
私は、「お寺が1,600。神社が300。」と言っていますが、神社の数にはいろいろ説があります。
ある本では「神社が400」と書いてあったり、インターネットの観光情報では「186」であったり、「812」と書いてあったりします。
これは、どういうことでしょう？
神主さんがいる神社に絞ったのか、無人の神社もカウントしたのかでは、ずいぶん違うでしょうね。
ガイドするときは、「300」が一般的だと思います。
一方、お寺の数は、1,608という正確な数字が出ています。
京都市図書館への問い合わせサイト「リファレンス」にその数字が載っています。出典は、「京都市統計書平成19年版」だそうです。京都市総合企画局情報化推進室情報統計課が発表しているものです。
こういう公的機関からの数字なので、お寺は「およそ1,600」でいけます。
京都にやってきたばかりの観光客には、こちらから質問してみるのもお楽しみです。「京都には、いくつのお寺があるか知っていますか？」
ガイドをしていたころ、バスツアーの最初によくこの質問をしました。京都に到着して間もない団体客は、これから始まる京都観光にワクワクしています。
「５０！」とか、「１００！」とかの声が飛び交います。
私が「1,600」と言うと、皆さん、楽しそうでした。「ヒュー」という口笛も。
「今日の半日ツアーは、その中から、選りすぐりの3カ所に参ります」
と、その日の訪問予定の3カ所が、特別な場所であることを印象付けることができます。
こうしてブログを書いていると、昔のガイド時代を懐かしく思いだしますねぇ。（ああ、若く美しかったころですわ～）
ガイド仲間の年賀状には、「昨年に続き、今年もインバウンドは忙しくなりそう」と書いてありました。

How many temples and shrines are there in Kyoto City?
I often explain that Kyoto has 1,600 Buddhist temples and 300 Shinto shrines. The number of shrines varies, though.
According to one guide book, there are 400 shrines, while some websites mention the numbers of 186 or 812 shrines.
How come?
If they pick up only the shrines resided by Shinto priest/priests, the number is small. Add the number of uninhabited shrines, and it will be around 800.
The number "300 shrines" is common when guiding, I guess.
Regarding the temples, the number is precise: 1,608.
Kyoto City Library clarifies this number in answering to an inquiry on the Internet, based on the figures compiled by a department of Kyoto city government specialized in statistics.
Reliable sources. You can say that Kyoto has about 1,600 temples.
Why not ask this question to foreign visitors to Kyoto?
"Do you know how many temple Kyoto has?"
I used to say this to my passengers on the sightseeing bus at the beginning of the Kyoto tour.
The groups were excited right after arriving in Kyoto, yelling "50!"or "100!"
When I gave them the answer of "1600," they smiled happily with some whistles.
"Today, I'm going to show you three best places on this half-day tour."
Saying this, I could raise their expectation of sightseeing in the ancient city.
Writing this blog brings happy memories to me; good old days as an English speaking guide- yes, when I was young and beautiful!
