"parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme"の繰り返し句は現代人にはよく理解できないが、象徴 的意味に満ちている。パセリ は今日まで消化の助けになり、苦味を消すと言われており、そして中世の医者はこれを霊的な意味としても捉えた。 セージ は何千年もの耐久力の象徴として知られている。ローズマリー は貞節、愛、思い出を表し、現在でも英国や他のヨーロッパの国々では花嫁の髪にローズマリーの小枝を挿す慣習がある。 タイム は度胸の象徴であり、歌が書かれた時代、騎士 達は戦いに赴く際に楯 にタイムの像を付けた。 歌での話し手は、4種のハーブ に言及することで、二人の間の苦味を取り除く温和さ、互いの隔たった時間を辛抱強く待つ強さ、孤独の間彼を待つ貞節、出来ない仕事を果たす矛盾した度胸を具えた真の恋人、そして彼女がそれらをできた時に彼の元に戻ってくることを望んでいる。

"parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme"は、当時のハーブ売りが用いていた、売り口上の決まり文句である。 日本の例でいえば、「さおだけ～さおだけ～」や「ほっかほかの焼き芋～本場薩摩の焼き芋だよとか、「魚安いよ、今日のおかずに秋刀魚いかが？」などのようなもの。つまりは自分がハーブ売りであること、ハーブを売るものが来たことを皆に知らしめるために節回しをつけて言われていたのである。
