I'm now flying over the Indian Ocean.

In one hour, I"ll arrive at Male, the capital of the Maldives.
(訳)一時間後には、私はモルディブ共和国の首都マレに到着します。
I'm very excited.
(訳)私はとても興奮しています。
My plan is to spend a week on the Maldives.
(訳)私の計画はモルディブ共和国で一週間を過ごすことです。
When I was surfing the Net a few months ago, I happened to read
about the Maldives.
(訳)私は数ヶ月前ネットサーフィンをしていたとき、私は偶然モルディブ
共和国について読みました。
According to the website, the Maldives is located to the south of India.
(訳)ウェブサイトによれば、モルディブ共和国はインドの南方に位置して
います。
It consists of about 1,200 islands, but people live on only 200 of them.
(訳)それはおよそ1200の島々からなっていますが、しかし人が居住する
のはそのうちの200の島です。
Visitors come from around the world and enjoy scuba diving, fishing,
and so on in the beautiful nature there.
(訳)世界中から多くの観光客がやってきて、そこの美しい自然の中で

The Maldives is called the last paradise on earth.
(訳)モルディブ共和国は、地上最後の楽園と呼ばれています。

I got on a boat and arrived at the dive site called Banana Reef.
(訳)私はボートに乗って、バナナ・リーフと呼ばれるダイビング・スポットに
到着しました。
I jumped into the water and saw a lot of beautiful fish and coral.
(訳)私は水の中に飛び込み、たくさんの美しい魚やサンゴを見ました。
They were wonderful!
(訳)それらはとてもキレイでした。
As I was swimming, a turtle resting on the coral reef came into view.
(訳)泳いでいるとき、サンゴ礁の上で休んでいる一匹のウミガメが見えて
きました。
It was so cute.
(訳)それはとても可愛かった。
I remembered the guide's words.
(訳)私はガイドの言葉を思い出しました。
He said, "The number of turtle is decreasing, so catching turtles is
banned."
(訳)彼は「ウミガメの数が減少しているため、ウミガメを捕ることは禁止
されています。」と言いました。
I also saw a lot of bleached coral.
(訳)また私は、たくさんの白化したサンゴも見ました。
Much of the coral was almost dead.
(訳)サンゴのほとんどは死にかけていました。
This was due to rising water temperatures caused by global warming.
(訳)これは、地球温暖化によって引き起こされた水温の上昇(=上昇を

This afternoon, I returned to Male by boat.

The entire island of Male is surrounded by seawalls.
(訳)マレ島全体は防波堤で囲まれています。
I felt that they didn't go well with the beautiful view.
(訳)私はそれらがマレの美しい風景に似つかわしくありませんでした。
The captain of the boat said, "Did you know that almost all of the
Maldive Islands are made up of coral reefs and that they are at
sea level?
(訳)ボートのキャプテンは言いました。
「あなたは、モルディブ諸島のほとんどの島は海面と同じ高さの
サンゴ礁で構成されているということを知っていますか？
The Maldives is one of the flattest countries in the world!

So, if the sea level rises because of global warming, our islands will be
underwater."

Who wants these beautiful islands to disappear under the sea?

The future of the Maldives is in our hands.
