California Island was golden island. and ironically, Spanish explorer Coltes misidentificate present Coltes Sea(Galfo California) which named from him. of course California in this sentence means the area include Baja California, now Mexico. as you know, a few century after Clifornia was separated across the border.
i consider that Japan has a history called 'golden Jipang' like this story. in a sense, California Island, Golden Country Jipang and any other storys about sanctuary
like Xanadu, Berbylon, Mu Continent were phantom. however, the legendary land develop as another legend after everyone know that they were phantom. today, we have Japanese dream. many American has California dream otherwise. cuz of just change. always Japan is innovative. California is also.

「黄金のジパング」の伝説と似たようなものだ。桃源郷も、ユートピアも、ムー大陸も、ザナドゥも、所詮は伝説だ。どの土地もやはり、次第に滅びていく。人々の憧れはやがて薄れ、かつての求心力を失っていく。しかし、伝説の土地は、また違った形で伝説を帯びる。アジア諸国がこの国に夢を持つように、また全米の人々が西海岸を目指すように。それも、昔とは違った目的で。それは変わり続けたからだ。いつも日本は発展し、カリフォルニアは文化を発信し続け、また新しいパラダイスに生まれ変わる。

だから俺たちは次のパラダイスを探し続けないといけない。
