昨日ぽろっと息子がねこねこ日本史が面白いと言っていたので、ねこねこ日本史の全巻を贈ろうかと思ってます(サンタが)
サンタについては、北米では有名な話1897年に8歳の女の子、バージニアが記者に書いた手紙が有名ですが、私は最近知りました。
目に見えないものを見る力、ここで書かれていることとはズレるけど、中学受験では国語や算数でも必要になると思う。相手の背景を想像する思いやりなど。目の前の事象だけで物事を判断しない想像力。親にも必要。子供の偏差値だけ見て怒らない。なぜその偏差値になるのか背景を考える。
相手の立場になって考えること、絶対に必須の力。
サンタさん、今年も世界中の子供達に喜びを与えてください。紛争地の子供達にも！
以下バージニアの手紙内容
Dear Editor
I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

編集長さま、わたしは８才です。わたしの友だちにはサンタクロースなんていないんだといっている子がいます。お父さんは「サン新聞に問い合わせてごらん。新聞社のひとがサンタクロースがいるというなら、たしかにいるんだろう」と、いいました。ほんとうのことをおしえてください。サンタクロースって、ほんとうに、いるんでしょうか？

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a sceptical age. They do not believe except what they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.
He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus?Thank God he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

バージニア、あなたのお友だちはまちがっています。何でも疑ってかかる疑りやさんになってしまっているのです。そういう人たちは自分の目に見えるものしか信じません。おともだちはその小さな頭で理解できないことなどありえないと思ってしまっているのです。大人であれ、子どもであれ、人間が考えたりできることは限られているのです。あらゆる真実と知識を内包する広い宇宙に比べれば、人間は小さなアリのようなものなのです。
そうです、バージニア、サンタクロースはいるのです。サンタクロースは、愛や人への思いやりや、献身が存在するのと同じくらい確実に存在します。それらがちゃんとあって、あなたの人生をすばらしいものにしてくれているのは知っているでしょう。ああ、もしサンタクロースがいなかったら、どんなにこの世はわびしく退屈なものでしょう! バージニアのようなかわいらしい子どものいない世界が考えられないのと同じくらいサンタクロースのいない世界はさびしいことでしょう。純真な信じる気持ちもなく、詩も、ロマンスもなくなってしまうでしょう。私達は自分が感じられるものや目に見れるものの中にしか楽しみを見つけることができなくなってしまうでしょう。子どものころに世界に満ちあふれている光も消えてしまうでしょう。
サンタクロースを信じないのなら、あなたは妖精も信じないのでしょうか。クリスマスイブにパパにたのんで、何人もの人に煙突という煙突を全部見張らせて、サンタクロースを捕まてもらったらどうですか。でもその時サンタクロースが煙突からおりてくるのを見なかったとして、いったいそれが何の証拠になるのでしょうか。サンタクロースを見た人はいません。しかし、それはサンタクロースがいないという証明にはならないのです。この世でもっとも確かな存在は子どもや大人の目に見えるものではないのです。芝生の上で舞う妖精の姿を見たことがありますか？もちろんないでしょう。でもそれは妖精がいないことの証明になってはいないのです。目に見えないもの、見ることができないものがこの世に存在するという不思議を想像することができないだけなのです。
赤ちゃんが持つガラガラを分解すれば、どうして音が鳴るのかわかるでしょう。でも、目に見えない世界を覆うベールは、どんなに力の強い人でも、それどころか、世界中の力持ちをみんな集めてきたとしても、引き裂くことはできません。信じる気持ちと想像力、それに詩と愛とロマンスだけが、そのカーテンを引き分けて、その向こうにある、この上なく美しく、輝かしいものを見せてくれるのです。そのようなものが人間のつくったでたらめといえるでしょうか。ねぇ、バージニア、それほど確かな、それほど変わらないものはこの世にはほかにないのですよ。
サンタクロースがいないですって！とんでもない！うれしいことにサンタクロースはいますよ。それどころかいつまでも死なないでしょう。1000年後までも、いえ、バージニア、100万年後までも、サンタクロースは子どもたちの心を喜ばせてくれるでしょう。
