30 solar eclipse campsites sell for $60,000 in online auction
A total 30 campsites sold for $60,000 in an online silent auction that ended Tuesday - a fundraiser for the nonprofit Oregon State Parks Foundation that drew interest from people around the country.
"It turned out great," Seth Miller, executive director of the foundation, said. "It turned out to be a great fundraiser for the parks and for us."
The 30 campsites are all within the "path of totality," the 60-mile-wide path in which the total solar eclipse will be visible, and were made for four nights from Aug. 18 to 22. The eclipse will happen on the morning of Monday, Aug. 21.
Miller declined to disclose the maximum bid for a campsite, but said the average works out to about $500 per night. It's far more than what the campsites usually go for, but it's still less than what some hotels in Oregon are charging, and they offer more amenities than will be available at the many farms and parking lots being parceled up for the big day.
All other state park campsites within the path of totality booked up as soon as they were made available in April. Reservable campsites managed by the U.S. Forest Service filled up earlier this year, and most hotels have been booked for years in advance.
