This year, in early November, some people and companies invested in NFTs. This caused the interest in NFTs to increase even more. This causes a lot of problems because NFTs use a lot of energy and electricity, which is very harmful to the environment.
What are NFTs?
- Data stored on a blockchain
- Contains photos, videos...
- A pyramid scheme
- Used for money laundering
- Things that are harmful to the environment due to the amount of energy they use
- Things that are used to steal artwork from independent artists, which could completely ruin their lives
- Not a good way of owning artwork
What happened recently?
A social networking app named Discord has tried to integrate NFTs into the platform. This caused their users to cancel their Nitro subscription.
Most people were against NFTs, considering the fact that they might cause problems, like harming the environment.
What's very worse is that there are people who continue to support NFTs, although NFTs are very problematic. For example, in the image below, someone tweeted that we should stop "NFTphobia" (which probably means hate towards NFTs) because there were a lot of hate, threats, and harassment towards people who do NFTs. Another problem is that they use the term "POC" as they call themselves "people of crypto". This is extremely racist towards people of colour because POC actually means people of colour.
Another thing is that even more companies are getting into NFTs, and that could cause a lot of problems to the environment.
Conclusion
Companies, people, and everyone need to be aware of the problems that NFTs can cause. NFTs are harmful to the environment, and it is very important to protect the environment.
I wrote this post because I recently found out that a game development company named Devsisters is getting involved in NFTs and trying to create them.
