清色川の川石を積んで作った玉石垣
入来の武家屋敷群の特徴の1つですが
Round-stone wall built by river stones from Kiyoshiki River
is one of the characterisics of Iriki old samurai quarter.
これ以外にも屋敷を守る防衛システムがあります。
Today, let me introduce another system to protect
samurai residences.
まずはいくつかの例をご覧下さい。
The followings are some examples;

お分かりのように、入り口からは中の様子が
分かりにくい作りになっています。
You can see it is difficult to see inside from outside.

屋敷は玉石垣とその上の植栽で馬場（道路）側からは
見えにくくなっています。
It is difficult to see inside from baba (street)
because the residence is surrouded by round-stone walls
on which tea trees (eg) are planted.
また、入口（門）から玄関へは、防衛上、（幾度か）曲がって
行くようになっています。
You can see the corner - 90-degree bend.
一方、屋敷の中（イラスト「おもて」側）から外の様子は
窺いやすいつくりになっています。
On the other hand, it is easier for the people in the residence
to see outside from omote house side.
「おもて」の縁側からあるいは床の間にある障子の部分から
外の様子を見ることができます。
