アダムの両性具有性

アダムが「両性具有」を論じた記事に登場しています!

Gender bender

Male celebrities take the trend even further, borrowing not only fashion from the ladies, but makeup as well: Adam Lambert has become ubiquitously known for his black nail polish and lip gloss, while Johnny Depp keeps his black eyeliner intact even when not in character as Captain Jack.

FROM ISSUE # 186 (June 2011)
On streets around the world, a revolution is emerging. This movement has nothing to do with fighting for democracy and everything to do with the freedom to blur traditional gender roles to express personal style. All of our traditionally held beliefs and roles are blurring. Fashion comes out of not just a desire for clothing; fashion always points back to political, economic, social, religious factors. So if society changes, fashion changes, too.

For decades, women's wear has mimicked the masculine aesthetic of menswear, from trouser pants to tuxedo vests. But now, guys are taking a cue from the girls, with collections featuring narrowly cut pants, draped fabrics and slim cardigans that, while not necessarily feminine, are at least decidedly androgynous in appearance.

Olsen Twins
Men in slim skinnies and women in baggy 'boyfriend' jeans are not an uncommon sight even on the streets of Kathmandu. Many stores now offer unisex lines making gender-ambiguous apparel even more accessible to the public.

Still somewhat controversial, the trend of androgynous fashion is sparking the creativity of apparel designers, fashion-loving tastemakers, and style icons. Women sporting 19th-century dandy style complete with top hats, ruffled shirts, and canes to men in draped pants with stylized hair and makeup, outfits on the runways this season bent fashion's gender rules in one way or another. The acceptance of men's fashion kilts and sarongs paired with traditional menswear jackets and T-shirts paved the way for designers to play with draping and softer silhouettes. Menswear designers are now adopting the traditional women's wear aesthetic into soft cardigans and accessories like scarves for men.

Agyness Deyn
But the really groundbreaking fashion moment for menswear is asymmetry and the fashion influence of cultures such as India, Africa, the Near East and the Pacific Rim – where traditional men's clothing includes sarongs and harem pants – has contributed to the gender-bending trend in men's apparel. One street wear interpretation of the androgyny trend is the extra-long T-shirt worn to the knees over leggings to mimic a traditional women's jersey dress. Japanese and Korean cultures have been featuring the androgynous look as depicted in both K-pop, J-pop and in Anime and Manga, as well as their fashion industries.

The trend is still developing, with plenty of room to grow. As with the fashion world's most compelling movements, style arbiters are still debating what direction the androgyny fashion trend will take.

While women began adopting menswear into their wardrobes early in the 20th century, men only recently began experimenting with the markers of traditional women's fashion. There are several distinct trends cropping up in menswear to usher in the new androgynous fashion movement. First, fashion designers such as Marc Jacobs began experimenting with alternatives to trousers for men with the idea of, 'Let's get the man out of the pants, not in a transvestite way but in a male way.'

Andrej Pejic
Male celebrities take the trend even further, borrowing not only fashion from the ladies, but makeup as well: Adam Lambert has become ubiquitously known for his black nail polish and lip gloss, while Johnny Depp keeps his black eyeliner intact even when not in character as Captain Jack.

Andrej Pejic, blonde blue eyed and beautiful, confidently sashays down ramps in womenswear at the most coveted shows. Andre is a 19 year old man. Lea T, a transsexual Brazilian fashion model, has full lips, lush cascading hair and a catty stare, and commands astronomical fees. A couple of years ago, the go-to-model for androgyny was Agyness Deyn; a woman with a short crop of hair and strong bone structure.

Adam Ant
Designers and photographers are slowly moving away from buxom images and exploring androgyny. Photographer Nick Knight, for example, has captured boys in lipstick and girls sporting beards for the winter/spring issue of Arena Homme +. Unlike before, androgyny is being discussed openly and seriously to the point of inspiring a magazine, Candy, edited by Luis Venegas. This is not about metrosexual males, skinny looks or 'pretty' boys. This is taking forward what Boy George, Annie Lennox or David Bowie wanted to speak about, a long long time ago.

Androgyny is the blending of male and female characteristics within a single individual, we are not talking about hermaphrodites, transvestites or any form of 'queer'. It became mainstream and trendy in the 1980s and produced some of our greatest pop culture and glam rock icons to date, David Bowie, Boy George, Adam Ant, Annie Lennox and KISS.

Annie lennox
We shouldn't be surprised the trend is coming back – everything runs in cycles, and as the saying goes 'everything old is new again'. Lady Gaga is the modern day Bowie, as Adam Lambert could be today's Adam Ant. When Annie Lennox donned the male suit in her music video "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" in 1983, it was seen as a form of cross-dressing and created much controversy. In 2011, when Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen donned on supposedly masculine suits during the 2011 Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards, they were ranked the best dressed by Teen Vogue.

We are breaking those boundaries now more than ever. From Kanye West to David Beckham, Jay-Z to Souljah Boy attired in snazzy sexy metro looks to Pink and Rihanna rocking the tuxedo look, fashion is reverting back to a time where it has no gender, only style and trend.

As compared to the strict gender norms one had to conform to in the past, it is interesting to observe how the power of fashion and the modelling industry played an imperative role in changing both the perspective of what a female ought to be, and the social response towards androgyny. No longer confined in dresses, skirts, long hair and dustpan in hand, women are now 'liberated' to wear the once-stereotypically masculine look – short hair, blazers, suits and pants, without a glance of disapproval cast from the society, but on the contrary, a thumbs-up by the society for making a fashion statement.

Gender-neutral clothing takes apparel design back to the bare essentials — well cut fabrics, in figure flattering cuts and neutral colours. It might take a while for people to get used to the idea of blurring the line between men and women's fashion, but once people realize that digging in their spouses' closet doubles the size of their wardrobe without spending a cent ... it could become a classic, enduring fashion statement.
