今日のお話は、畑について
Fermoy Estateは「ゴールデントライアングル」と呼ばれている場所に畑を構えていますが、その「ゴールデントライアングル」と呼ばれる土壌は、ワインにどんな影響を与えているんですか？
Question: Your winery is located in what is known as the Golden Triangle. What impact does that have on the characteristics of your wine?
ご存知の通り、マーガレットリバーはオーストラリアの中でも一流のワイナリーとして認められています。ですが実際に、数字でみるとマーガレットリバーで育てられたブドウはたった２％。（その他９８％はオーストラリア中の他の産地で育てられたブドウです。）マーガレットリバーの生産者のブドウの生産量シェアは、オーストラリアのマーケット全体でみると２０％です。そのマーガレットリバーがどのように良いのか。マーガレットリバーはとても大きな地域であるため、その中でもいくつかの区域に分かれます。Fermoy Estateは、マーガレットリバーの中の一つの小さな区域「Wilyabrup」という所に位置します。ここ、wilyabrupこそが、「ゴールデントライアングル」と呼ばれる土地なのです。この土地は、マーガレットリバーの中でも間違いなく一番だと考えられています。「ゴールデントライアングル」は、ベスト中のベスト。素晴らしいマーガレットリバーの中に位置する素晴らしい畑ということになります。
フランスでは、素晴らしい土壌のことを「テロワール」と表現します。テロワールの正確な英語訳はありません。ですが、テロワールとは、土・気候・畑の配置・ワインのスタイルに影響を与えるすべての要因がうまく組合わさっていることを意味します。wilyabrupは、素晴らしいてロワールを持っているんです。土は、美しく気候は、至って標準。海のそばに位置することから海岸の良い影響も受けやすいです。気温も穏やかで大きな気温の変動はありません。これらの環境が、ぶどうの品質を高めてくれます。そんな素晴らしいテロワールを持っているのが、wilyabrupであり、マーガレットリバーの中で、「ゴールデントライアングル」と呼ばれる場所なのです。間違いなく最高の場所です。
Answer: So as I said, Margaret river is regarded in Australia as one of the most prestigious wine regions. Margaret river actually produces only 2% of Australia’s grapes and has a 20% market share. That’s how good Margret River is. But Margaret river is a quite big region and then within that region you have subregions. We’re in a subregion called Wilyabrup. Wilyabrup is right in the heart of what people refer to as the Golden Triangle. This is an area in Margaret river which is considered to be the absolute the best. The Golden Triangle is the best of the best. The best part of the best region being Margaret River.
French people have described wineries as terroir. There is no real English translation for that but what it means is the combination of soil, climate and the layout of the particular vineyard all influence the style of the wine and influences the essence of the winery. Wilyabrup has magnificent terroir. The soil is beautiful and the climate is very moderate. It’s right by the sea so it has nice costal influences. The temperature is very moderate and there is not a lot of fluctuation in temperature which enhances the quality of the grapes. So in essence, its this terroir, this combination of the property and the climate and the influences which makes the Wilyabrup region and the Golden Triangle region in Margaret River the absolute best.
つまり、特に優れたテロワールというのが「ゴールデントライアングル」ですか？
Question: So having great terroir means the Golden Triangle?
ゴールデントライアングルは、最高のテロワールだと考えられています。加えて、フランスのボルドーにとても似ていると言われているんです。とても良く似た気候や影響を受けています。フランスのボルドーと言えば、昔から世界的に素晴らしいワインを造ってきた地域です。そのボルドーと、マーガレットリバーがほぼ同じようなテロワールを持ち、気候や条件までも似ていると言うのは、私たちも世界に通用するワインが造れるということだと思うんです。
Answer: The Golden Triangle is considered to have the best terroir and it is very similar to Bordeaux region of France. It has very similar climate and very similar influences and the Bordeaux region of France has been considered to have produced some of the world’s best wines for so long. But Margaret River has almost an identical terroir and climatic factors which means the wines we produce are as good as any wines produced anywhere in the world.
とは言え、ボルドーのワインと西オーストラリアのワインには大きな違いもあると私は、思います。ゴールデントライアングルがボルドーのテロワールとほぼ同じということは、マーガレットリバーのワインは、ボルドーのワインをほぼ同じ味わいということに繋がるんですか？
Question: I believe Bordeaux wine and Western Australian wine are completely different. But you said that the Golden Triangle has similar terroir to the Bordeaux region. Does this mean that Margaret River wine tastes similar to Bordeaux Wine?
そうですね、私たちが持つ環境は、土・気候・気温・沿岸の影響などすべてがボルドーに似ていると言えます。オーストラリアには、他にもたくさんの素晴らしいワイン産地があります。ですが、ここマーガレットリバーのゴールデントライアングルがまさにボルドーのテロワールを映し出していると思います。
Answer: Yes that’s correct. It’s the soil, the climate, the temperature and the costal influences that all combine to make it very similar to Bordeaux. Australia has the other fantastic wine regions as well. It’s just the Golden Triangle region in Margaret River really mirrors the terroir in the Bordeaux region of France.
ワインを造る過程の中で、Fermoy Estate自身もボルドーに似るように意識して造っていくんですか？それとも、土壌や気候、まさにゴールデントライアングルという土壌が、ボルドーに似た味わいを生み出すんですか？
Question: Is Fermoy Estate trying to make similar wine to Bordeaux? Or is it the soil, the climate and the terroir of the Golden Triangle region in Margaret River which makes the wine taste similar to Bordeaux wine?
その通り、気候にしても色々な影響にしてもすべて元から持った環境がボルドーに似ているんです。私たちのワインの中には、確かに、ボルドースタイルのものがあります。ですが、私たちがわざと似せて造ったのではありません。私たちは、マーガレットリバーの素晴らしいワインを造り皆さんにマーガレットリバーの素晴らしさを感じてもらいたのです。それが、結果的にボルドースタイルに近いワインに仕上がったということです。
Answer: Correct, I think the climate, the influences and the general terroir are very similar to Bordeaux. Our style of wine that we produce is similar but we don’t deliberately try to make a French style wine. We try to make a Margaret River wine which is beautiful and reflects the specifics of Margaret River. But it is similar to Bordeaux wine.
