T here’s something uniquely dispiriting about a film that manages to waste the considerable talents of almost everybody involved, both in front of and behind the camera. Director Miguel Arteta, who brought a bracingly transgressive tartness to indie comedies Chuck & Buck and The Good Girl, delivers sloppily paced hack work here, while Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne, two fine comic actresses, are shackled to a screenplay so crassly tone-deaf, it makes you want to chisel off your own ears.
Haddish and Byrne play Mia and Mel respectively, childhood friends who realised their dream of starting a cosmetics company together, but are pitted against each other when they are bought out by uber-bitch billionaire businesswoman Claire Luna (Salma Hayek). A nagging score flags up the spaces where the jokes should be. The one redeeming feature is Billy Porter, playing Mia and Mel’s employee Barrett, whose “tragic moment” of fabulous melodrama is more fun than everything else in the movie put together.

Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2020 Format: Prime Video “Like a Boss” Distributed by Paramount Pictures, 83 Minutes, Rated R, Released January 10, 2020: Lifelong friends played by Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne own a marginally successful New York City cosmetics store. When Byrne’s creative bookkeeping results in an overwhelming debt, the two reluctantly agree to a corporate purchase from a global cosmetics conglomerate headed by the duplicitous Salma hides a clause in the contract awarding herself controlling interest in their company and original products if she can break up their friendship. Directed by Miguel Artera from a script by Sam Pitman and Adam Cole-Kelly and originally titled “Limited Partners, ” “Like a Boss” is that rare animal--a movie comedy devoid of laughs or funny situations. Crude, raucous, sexist, offensive, abrasive, and borderline racist, the picture can’t even be redeemed by performances from the always-appealing Haddish and Byrne. A sample line: “You smell fresh and a thermometer before it goes in your butt. ” And somebody should’ve told the writers that jokes about drug abuse haven’t been fashionable since the 1980s. Accordingly, “Like a Boss” is earning excoriating reviews from the critics, including approval ratings of just 21% from Rotten Tomatoes and 32% from Metacritic. Rotten Tomatoes in their consensus notes that the picture is “likely to leave audience members feeling swindled out of their investments. ” Projected by distributor Paramount Pictures to earn up to $12 million during its opening weekend, “Like a Boss” was able to attract only $10 million in revenues, finishing in a disappointing fifth place in the Box Office Mojo Top Ten. Why in the world is a movie about women driven by a creative staff comprised almost exclusively of men? Executive producer Haddish should’ve known better. “Like a Boss” is rated R for adult language, crude sexual material, and drug use.
Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2020 Format: Prime Video Tiffany Hadish (Girls Trip) and Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids, Insidious) team up in this somewhat successful, raunchy friendship flick. They play two women Mia and Mel who are best friends and own a failing makeup company together. Along comes a campy but cartoonish Salma Hayek, a successful business owner who offers to get them out of debt but is really looking to con them out of their business. A very funny Billy Porter and Jennifer Coolidge also star. There are a few big laughs and a lot of giggles but unfortunately most of the best scenes are in the trailers. The movie is very predictable and by the numbers but it mostly works for what it is. The chemistry and the charisma between the two leading ladies and scene stealer Billy Porter of Pose are what saves it from being forgettable even though it can feel a little phoned in at times. Decent and entertaining but nothing mindblowing.

They live together and are going broke. Salma Hayek offers to partner with them and does so aggressively in such a way as to cause the friends to have a riff. The all-female lead cast comedies have met with success. This one is not one of them. I love Rose Byrne as the voice of Lexi, in this film she couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. Her hair was simply awful for someone in her line. The dialogue attempted to pass crudeness for humor. This normally works but fell flat in this film. Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

We are all busy women working our ass off in our own individual careers, so it was nice to have a fresh film that reminds us of what’s really important as cheesy as that is adulthood has us all in our heads and we sometimes forget to check in with each other and u can’t stop yourself from laughing at any movie Tiffany haddish is in was also cool seeing salma hayek in a crazy ass wig.

" Like a Boss " is a song written and recorded by comedy hip hop troupe The Lonely Island and released on their debut studio album Incredibad. The song is a parody of the song of the same name from Slim Thug 's debut album Already Platinum. The song is narrated by a businessman ( Andy Samberg) who describes his increasingly outlandish daily activities as "the boss".
The music video initially aired as an SNL Digital Short on Saturday Night Live with actor Seth Rogen. In 2011, it was subject to a lawsuit from the producers of the song, who claimed they never received proper compensation for their work.

"Like a Boss" premiered as a Saturday Night Live Digital Short on April 4, 2009. [1] In the song, Andy Samberg is a businessman, evidently in middle management, having a performance review. The reviewer asks him to describe the things he does in an average day, and does so for the remainder of the song in his trademark aggressive style while repeating the lyric "like a boss" after every activity.
Video [ edit]
The video features Seth Rogen, recording over the vocals done by Akiva Schaffer on the single. The video adds additional visuals not included with the words of the song. It ends with Samberg's tombstone being shown (which has the epitaph "He was da Best"), and a skeptical Rogen trying to confirm some of the more bizarre events with Samberg. The "bomb the Russians" part shows Samberg attacking St. Basil's Cathedral.
The video features brief cameo appearances from Saturday Night Live writer John Mulaney as the worker that Samberg micromanages, Casey Wilson as the woman giving Samberg the memo, Kristen Wiig as Samberg's office crush Debra, Jason Sudeikis as Samberg's boss and Bill Hader as the man on whom Samberg performs fellatio. It also features Jorma Taccone as the man giving him the lawsuit, and Akiva Schaffer selling him the gun. Abby Elliott and Bobby Moynihan can be seen in the video as background dancers.

Prior to the release of the video on Saturday Night Live, the term "Like a Boss" was not often searched for or used in social context. Though it was indeed searched for prior to the release of the video, the term clearly spiked at release and peaked on Google on April 29, 2009, hitting a 100 on the Google Trend chart. [2] It has also become popular on social media sites such as Twitter [3] Tumblr, [4] and Facebook, [5] where it is a popular hashtag to cite a task completed, goal achieved or successful action that someone is proud of doing. It has also led to parody videos such as "Like a Bus", [6] where a bus is shown flying through traffic and often bad weather conditions with no regard or slowing for the bad conditions. On 22 October 2012, "Like A Boss" surpassed 100 million views. The video was featured by The Huffington Post, [7] and TV Guide. [8]
Lawsuit [ edit]
In November 2011 a production team from St. Louis filed charges against Andy Samberg and Co., NBC Universal and Universal Republic Records. At the root of the suit was the claim that Monique “Foxx StarStrukk” Hines and Aleric “Rick Tha Rular” Banks submitted the audio track for "Like a Boss" along with the audio track that would become another hit for The Lonely Island, "Shy Ronnie". The duo claimed that, through a mutual connection in 2008, they knew Samberg and submitted their tracks for inclusion in the upcoming debut album, Incredibad. The Lonely Island then recorded their own lyrics on top of the audio track to create the songs. The duo from StarStrukk productions claimed that they were never compensated properly for their work, both in money and recognition / notoriety. Banks claimed that originally he signed an agreement giving him a 50% ownership of the song, given his position as writer and producer. According to his lawsuit, he received a response from Universal Music Group that gave him only a 25% interest in "Like a Boss. " Banks, however, claims that he has yet to see any sort of a royalty for the song. Another track from the duo was later featured on the band's 2011 album Turtleneck & Chain in the song "Shy Ronnie 2: Ronnie & Clyde. " [9]

On the NBC version of this digital short, the part where Andy has a gun in his mouth and whines, "Oh fuck, man, I can't fuckin' do it. Shit! " had the shot of Andy with the gun in his mouth shortened and redubbed the line to, "Oh crap, man, I can't effin' do it. Ugh!! "

Premise [ edit]
Two friends with very different personalities run their own beauty company, Mia&Mel, though Mia is more practical and inventive, while Mel wants to earn her fortune quickly and live a lavish lifestyle. Things take a turn for the worse when their company runs into debt, forcing them to turn to unscrupulous benefactor Claire Luna, head of a major cosmetics empire, who intends to steal the business out from under them. The two must address their differences to save their business, as they are faced with the challenge of 'proving' themselves to Luna even as Luna steals their 'one-night-stand' bag idea and has it marketed through one of her other companies, as well as forcing them to fire their old workers. Mia and Mel briefly 'split up' through their different approaches to Luna's offer, but they reconcile when their friends help them face how they need each other. Faced with the possible loss of their business, Mia and Mel approach Shay, Luna's former business partner, to start a new company, Proud Cosmetics, marketing their new 'Ride or Die' product, make-up intended to be used by best friends together to face their nights out. With this loophole, Mia and Mel are able to produce and market 'Ride or Die' under the 'Proud' banner while Luna takes ownership of Mia&Mel while still required to pay them 49% of all subsequent earnings.

On October 23, 2017, it was announced that Paramount Pictures had bought a female-centered comedy spec, Limited Partners, specifically as a starring role for Tiffany Haddish. The film was written by Sam Pitman & Adam Cole-Kelly, from a story by the two, and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, and was produced by Peter Principato, Itay Reiss, and Joel Zadak through their Principato-Young Entertainment (now known as Artists First). [3] In July 2018, Paramount set Miguel Arteta as director. [4] Later the same month, Rose Byrne was cast as the film's other lead. [5] In September 2018, Salma Hayek was added to play the villain. [6] In October 2018, Ari Graynor, Jacob Latimore, Karan Soni, Jimmy O. Yang, Natasha Rothwell, Jessica St. Clair and Billy Porter also joined the cast of the film. [7]
Principal photography on the film began in October 2018. [6] In July 2019, the film was re-titled Like a Boss. [8]

In the United States and Canada, the film was released alongside Underwater and the expansions of Just Mercy and 1917, and was projected to gross $10–12 million from 3, 078 theaters in its opening weekend. [11] The film made $3. 9 million on its first day of release, including $1 million from Thursday night previews. It went on to debut to $10 million, finishing fifth at the box office. [12]
Critical response [ edit]
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 21% based on 107 reviews, with an average rating of 4. 15/10. The site's critics consensus reads, " Like a Boss oversees a merger of powerful comedic talents, but the end results are likely to leave audience members feeling swindled out of their investments. " [13] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 32 out of 100 based on 28 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews. " [14] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B" on an A+ to F scale, and PostTrak reported it received an average 3 out of 5 stars from viewers. [12]
Rolling Stone ’s Peter Travers gave the film 1 out of 5 stars and wrote, "What we have here is a comedy on life support, with Haddish and Byrne valiantly performing futile acts of resuscitation. Sorry to report: The patient died. " [15]
