幾年か昔のことであった。
海沿いの王領に
アナベル・リイと言う名前で
人の知る乙女が住んでいたのは、
そしてこの乙女私と愛し合つていることの外は
餘念もなかった。
海沿いの王領に
私も童 女も童、
しかし二人は戀（こい）にも優る戀で愛し合つていた。
私とアナベル・リイは、
天に舞う至上天使さえ
女と私を羨んでいた程に。
その昔
この海沿いの王領で、
雲から風が吹き降りて、
美（うるわ）しのアナベル・リイを冷やしたのは、それ故か。
高貴のやから訪れて
女を私から奪い去つた。
この海沿いの王領の
墓にいれんとて。
天上の幸及ばぬ天使らは
女と私を羨んでたち去った。
まことに、それ故であつた（海沿いの王領で
誰ものこらず知つているが）
夜半、風が雲から吹き降りて
アナベル・リイの冷たくなつたのは。
しかし私達の戀は、私達より年上の人の戀よりも
私達より賢い人の戀よりも、
はるかに強かつた。

海の底（そこい）の惡魔さえ
決して私の魂を、美わしのアナベル・リイから
裂き得まい。
というのは、月照ればあわれ
美わしのアナベル・リイは私の夢に入る。
