Open Mic Night〜。。。。。
先週はめちゃくちゃ寒かったメルボルン、でも今週はほぼ２４度で結構あったかい。
メルボルンの天気ってちょこちょこ変わるからね。
昨夜、The Empress Hotelのオープンマイクで演奏してきました～
２回目かな。
結構オレ、オープンマイク好きかも。
実はオレが日本で音楽活動を始めるのもオープンマイクのおかげなんだ。
まぁ、その話は今度ってことで。w
１９時半に会場で並んで、自分が演奏したい時間帯に名前を書く。
そしてステージでは１５分間、自由に演奏が出来る。
サウンドの人がいる会場もあれば、いない場所もある。
The Empress Hotelではプロのサウンドの方がいるから本当に楽でした。
オレは１９時に会場に着いてまず並んどく。
ここのオープンマイク、結構人気で沢山のバンドやアーティストが来るんだよね。
２０時３０分スタートで１０組だけ演奏できるから早く着いて並ぶ事が大事。
昨夜は残念ながら４組ぐらい出番がなかった。
誰よりも早く着く事とか、並んで自分が欲しい時間帯を選ぶとか・・・マジで戦いっす！！
そして全く知らない人たち、全く自分の音楽を知らない人たちの前で演奏、それも戦いだね。笑
でもね、オープンマイクだから色んな演奏者がいるね。
マネージャーがついてて機材がスゴくてカメラマンも連れて来て写真いっぱいとってるアーティストだけど、演奏と歌はそんな上手くなかったとか。
ギター１本で歌がJohn Mayerっぽくて最高なグルーブが出せるだ～～らしないシンガーもいたし。
ホームレスみたいな方がステージで好きなポエムを読んだり。
まぁ、色々あるんですよ。笑
１回目のオープンマイクでは、ループマシンを使って一人でジャムった。
今回はカラオケ音源で何曲か演奏しました。
お客さんはみんなオーストラリア人、そして会場はバー。
そんな場所でバイオリン、しかもクラシックじゃなくオリジナル曲。
オーストラリア人にとってはとてもフレッシュで珍しいかもしれない。
演奏後にはネームカードがすぐに配り終わるし、色んなバンドやアーティストからRECやライブのオファーが来るし。本当にありがたいです！w
でもね、オレが昨日感じた事なんだけど・・・
オープンマイクってのは、オーガナイザーがいて、演奏者がいて、会場があって、お客さんがいて、全部のコラボで出来てるんだ。
演奏する方は友達を連れてくる。オープンマイクは無料だからせめてバーでドリンクを買う。自分の演奏が終わっても他のアーティストの演奏も応援して観る。
ってオレは思うんだ。まぁ、当たり前の話だけどね。
だけどそう思ってないアーティストもいるんだ。
自分の時間帯だけ会場に入って来て、演奏したらすぐに帰る。
しかもね、バーだからお客さんが演奏中に会話してるのは仕方ない。
でもお客さんを演奏に注目するのはステージ上のアーティストの責任。
昨日ね、ギターの弾き語りの方がいてさ・・・
３７歳ぐらいかな？オリジナル曲で、申し訳ないけど、上手くないんだ。
お客さんも良い演奏と良くない演奏の違い分かるから、徐々にざわざわしてきてさ。
彼が２曲歌い終わった時に、mcで
「最後の１曲やります。バラードです。そして、後ろで立ってて会話してるうるさい奴ら。黙れ。むかつくんだよ！」
がーーーーーーーーーーーーん！！！！！
オレ的にはNGだね。
そんな事、ステージで言える？客席を見るとみんな口を開けてて頭を降ってる。
せっかくのバラード、だぁ～～～れも聞いてなかったな。
彼の演奏後、彼を応援しに来てた友達に行ってドヤ顔で「どう？良かったでしょ？」って言ってた。
えええええぇぇぇぇぇぇぇぇぇぇぇ～～！！
ハァ～、色んな人がいるね。苦笑

You gotta love the weather changes in Melbourne~
Last night, I performed at an open mic night @ the Empress Hotel.
It's my second time there.
I really enjoy playing at open mics.
Did you know, playing at open mics in Japan got me started working in Japan?
Well, I'll tell you that story next time.
So, what you do at an open mic is...
Rock up at 7:30pm, line up and sign up for a preferred or available time slot.
You get 15mins on stage, and you are free to do what ever you like.
Some places have sound guys, some don't.
The Empress Hotel has a professional sound guy, who's REALLY GOOD!!
I usually arrive at 7pm and wait in line.
The open mic at the Empress Hotel is getting real popular lately!
Starts at 8:30pm with max of 10 acts, so getting there early is important.
Coz last night, i think more than 4 groups didn't get a spot to play.
It's a battle to get that spot!! haha
And it's a battle on stage too. Performing in front of people who
don't know you or your music.
But you know, it's an open mic.
You get all sorts of acts coming in.
You'll get a comedy music group, or really good guitar vocalist,
or even some random old fellow reading his favourite poems.
All sorts... haha
My first gig there, I jammed over my loop station.
This time, I played a few songs with my backing tracks.
It's an Australian crowd, and it's in a bar.
To see a Violin at such a place,
and be performing original music instead of classical music,
I think it's unique and fresh to the Australian ears.
I handed out hand full of business cards after my performance,
and so many musos wanted to record or jam, collaborate with me.
I am very grateful~ Thank you! :)
But you know something?
I was thinking this last night...
To run an open mic, you need organisers, performers, venue, customers,
and all together it's a big collaboration.
If you're performing, try and bring a friend.
It's a free show, so at least buy a drink at the bar.
Even though you've finished your performance, at least
stay and watch the other performers too.
Well, this is just my opinion.
I also think it's common sense too.
BUT, you have some artists who doesn't think that way.
Rock up 5mins before their time, play their set,
then leave the venue.
And it's a bar... you'll get people chatting during a performance.
You can't do anything about it.
But I believe, to get everyone's attention during your performance
is the artists on stage's responsibility.
Last night, there was this guy... Singer on the guitar...
He looked mid 30s?
Played original songs, but hmmm...wasn't special.
And look, the audience knows what's a good performance
and what's not.... so some people started to get chatty.
He finished his 2 songs, and said this through the mic...
"Ok, next is my last song. It's a ballad. And could I get some
attention to the people at the back who are talking during my performance.
Shut the F**K up! You're p*ssing me off!!"
O M G!!!!!!!
That is a big NO NO for me!!
How can you say such a thing on stage?
To people who are listening to you??
Everyone had their mouths open, and shaking their heads...
Such a shame for that Ballad song...coz NOOOO one listened.
After he finished playing, he walked over to his mates who came
and watched him played and said...
"Yea, was pretty good yea?"
Oh, Come on~!!!!!!!!
Sigh* so many different people around....
