知ってたつもり？！誤解されてる英単語ベスト10

簡単英単語の持つ意味深し
　英単語帳に英単語と日本語訳を書いて、テスト前に必死になって覚えた思い出のある人は多いはず。その時の暗記の成果のたまものか、英単語に対して「これはこういう意味」という記憶がしっかりと脳みそにこびりついているかもしれませんが、残念ながらその英単語はもっと広く深い意味を持っているかも…。そこで今回は、「誤解」の多い英単語ベスト10を、白井章教先生に教えてもらいました。
1位：「be動詞」は「～です」ではない
2位：「the」は「その」の以外にも意味がある
3位：「of」をすべて「の」で置き換えるのはムリ
4位：きちんとわかっていないと混乱する「to」
5位：「in」は「～の中に」だけでは不十分

■１位　「be動詞」は「～です」ではない

　「be動詞(am, are, isなど)」は、「～です」「イコール」として置きかえられることが多いですが、これは不十分です。be動詞は、「主語がどういう人・物か説明したり、主語についてもっと情報を与えたりする時に使う言葉」です。”He is happy.””He is a student.”という場合、主語の「He(彼)」を説明するのに「is」が使われています。「イコール」は間違っています。すべての「a student(一人の生徒)」は「He(彼)」ではないため、イコールではないです。さらに、「be動詞」には「存在している；　いる；　ある」の意味もあります。例えば、”He is in the house.”の場合、「彼は家の中にいる」という意味になり、前の意味とは全く違います。

■２位　「the」は「その」の以外にも意味がある

　「the」には、「特定の物・人などを指す時に使う言葉」の意味以外に、「名詞の単数形の前で使われ、特定の一つではなく、その名詞が指すグループ全体を言いたい時に使う言葉」の意味があります。例えば、”The dog is man’s best friend.（犬は人類の最良の友だ。）”は、「特定の一匹の犬」を言っているのではなく、「犬」というもの全体を指しています。「a（一つの）」にも、同じ意味があります。”A fish swims.”は、「魚というものは、泳ぐ。」という意味です。

■３位　「of」をすべて「の」で置き換えるのはムリ

　「of」には、たくさんの意味があります。面倒ですが、それぞれをきちんと理解しないといけないです。例えば、”two of the men（その男たち）”の「of」は「～に含まれている～、～の中の～」の意味で、「その男たちのうちの２人」という意味になります。”a glass（グラス） of water（水）”の「of」は、「ofに続く物を含んでいる」という意味で、「水の入ったグラス」の意味になります。”within a kilometer of the house”の「of」は「～から」を表し、「その家から１km以内」の意味です。”a giant(巨人) of a man(男)”の「of」は「２つの単語の間に使われ、前の単語が後ろの単語を説明する時に使う言葉」の意味で、「男の巨人」ではなく「巨人のよう な男」の意味になります。

　簡単な頻出単語ほど、使い方をマスターすれば英語力に幅も出てくるはず。「今年こそ英語をマスターしたい！」と考えている人は、ランキングを参考に、まずは基本的な英単語のおさらいから始めてみるのもよいかもしれませんね。

Wanda's dishwasher quit working so she called a repairman. She told the repairman,"Don't worry about my bulldog. He won't bother you. But do NOT, under ANY circumstances, talk to my parrot!"

The repairman arrived. Just as she had said, the dog just lay there on the carpet watching. The parrot, however, drove him nuts with his incessant yelling and name calling.

Finally the repairman couldn't contain himself any longer and yelled, "Shut up, you stupid, ugly bird!" To which the parrot replied, "Get him, Spike!"

Many people were waiting for the train. Some were reading newspapers, and some were saying goodbye to their friends. Dr. Wang, Mr. Li, and Mr. Chen were talking so happily and excitedly that they didn't know the train was going to leave. Then the guard called loudly, "The train is going to leave. Hurry up, please." The three men heard the guard and two of them jumped onto the train quickly before it moved. One was left behind. It was Dr. Wang. He looked very sad. The guard came to him and said, "Don't feel bad. The next train will come in ten minutes." "I know," Dr. Wang said, "but it was my train. My friends only came to say goodbye to me."
