The railway and the railway engine were invented in Britain, by George Stephenson, in the early part of the nineteenth century. At that time, the way to use electricity had ｎot been discovered, but Britain had enormous supplies of coal, and they continued to run on coal long after the newer railways in many other countries had been electrified.
