blotch /blάtʃ/ を取り上げます。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「〔…についた〕（インクなどの）大きなしみ、汚れ」や「［比喩的に］しみ、汚点」などとありました。LDOCEでは“a pink or red mark on the skin, or a coloured mark on something”と定義されています。Oxford Living Dictionariesでは“A large irregular patch or unsightly mark on the skin or another surface.”と説明がなされていました。
blotとbotchが組み合わさってできた言葉のようです。
過去のブログを読んでみたところ、「病斑」という意味もあることが分かりました。確かにblotchで画像検索をかけてみたところ、植物の画像が多く見られます。こちらも併せて覚えておきたいです。(rain)
