A new U.N. report is forecasting that the world’s population will increase from 7.2 billion today to 8.1 billion in 2025 and 9.6 billion in 2050.
The report, released on Thursday, said most of the population growth will occur in developing regions which are projected to increase from 5.9 billion in 2013 to 8.2 billion in 2050.
During that same period, it said, the population of developed countries is expected to remain largely unchanged at around 1.3 billion people.
The report said much of the overall increase between now and 2050 is expected to take place in Africa and countries with large populations such as India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines and the United States.

国連の新しい報告書は、世界の人口が現在の72億人から2025年には81億人、2050年には96億人に増加すると予測している。
木曜日に発表されたこの報告書によると、人口増加の大部分は発展途上地域で起こり、2013年の59億人から2050年には82億人に増加すると予測されている。
同時期、先進国の人口は13億人程度でほぼ横ばいとなる見通しだという。
報告書によると、現在から2050年にかけての全体の増加の多くは、アフリカと、インド、インドネシア、パキスタン、フィリピン、米国などの人口の多い国で起こることが予想されるとしています。
