コロナウィルスで休館延長となっていた国立近代美術館でのピーター・ドイグ展が期間が10/11 までとなり、再開されました。
ピーター・ドイグは1959年、スコットランドエディンバラ生まれの画家で主に油絵を制作。ドイグが活躍を始める1980年代はコンセプチュアルアート(観念芸術)主流の頃で、その中にあって絵画に「内容」や「意味」を見いだそうとする新表現主義と言われる分野に属する画家です。ムンクやゴーギャンの技法の流れを組む表現でイギリスではターナー賞にノミネートされるなど以前から評価が高く、国内での展示は初めてということで行って来ました。
近美では以前から企画展の内容がジェンダーの作家であったり、様々な視点からも興味の湧く作家の展示も多く、今回のドイグの展示も「画家の中の画家」と評される理由、そしてこれまで国内では殆ど知名度の低かった理由など素朴な疑問を解消することも今回の来館の理由でした。
さて、ドイグ作品にはポイントがいくつかあって、過去に観た映画のシーンからイメージを想起して制作された作品、また過去に住んだカナダ、そしてトリニダード・トバゴ共和国(現在も居住)の風景を自分なりにイメージし制作された作品がメインとなっています。イメージソースとなっている映画は例えば「13日の金曜日」のシーンから想起された＜カヌー湖＞や「東京物語」から＜ラペイルーズの壁＞など其々がドイグ独自の味付けがされたノスタルジーな作品。表現方法は多く、ゴーギャンの色彩やムンク的な描き方など過去の画家を模した技法となっていて、特に新しいとかアバンギャルドであるとかという感じではないようです。
ただ、ドイグのこれまでの経歴がゴーギャンのようにドラマティックな部分もあり、人生そのもが作品に微妙な色合いを与えていることは確かなことのようです。グローバル化が進んだとはいえ、日本と欧米ではまだ、感じ方、視点の取り方の違いが残り、作品への評価も理解できない部分も多くあるように感じます。ただ、日本との接点として映画「東京物語」、北海道のニセコスキー場のポスターからイメージされた作品などがあり、かれのイメージソースとして日本のワンシーンも題材の一つになっていることは事実です。そして、現在進行形のドイグの心象風景が既に、センチメンタルなセピア色の思い出として表現されているところが若い鑑賞者の共感を得ている部分かもしれません。
Art painter in art painter? Peter Doig Exhibition
National Museum of Modern Art,Tokyo of Peter Doig Exhibition whose closure period was put off due to coronavirus has been decided toresume its operation until October 11,2020.
Peter Doig, an artist painter who was born in Edinburgh,Scotland in 1959 mainly produced oil paintings.
Peter Doig emerged in the 1980s when conceptual art was prevailing. In the meantime, he belongs to the field called "New Expressionism" which is aimed to discover "contents" or "meanings" in pictures.
He has had a good reputation for years on the ground that he was nominated for the "Turner Prize" in U.K. with the expression of taking on the technique of Edvard Munch and Paul Gauguin. I saw the work since the exhibition was for the first time in Japan.
National Museum of Modern Art has treated some artworks fo gender artists in the contents of a rotating exhibit and put on display those of the artists a lot wich would intrique us in various views.
This time I visited the museum to smooth over the simple questions as to why the exhibition of Peter Doig is regarded as "Art ppainter in art painter" and why he is so low-profile in Japan.
By the way, there are a few words of caution in artworks of Peter Doig. His art works are mostly created by conjuring an image a film scene in the past or an image of the lanscape in his mind of Canada and the Republic of Torinidad and Tobago(where he still lives in). Peter Doig created ＜Canoe lake＞by getting an idea from a film scene of "Friday the 13th" and ＜Lapeyrouse Wall＞from "Tokyo story" both of which are nostalgic artworks flavored with his distinctive manner.
He hs many ways in expression where his technique is similar to the past art painter such as Gauguin, it maybe sure that his life itself is giving a subtle hue to his artworks. In spite of advancing globalization, there atill remains differences in hw to sense or view the art between Japan nad Western countries, so we have a lot of things that we cannot share in appreciating the evaluation of art, don't we? It is, however, true that one of his subjects originate from one scene in Japan as his source of image, he includes artwords created through the image from the cinema "Tokyo story" or the poster of Niseko ski resort in Hokkaido. And young authenticators may probably habe empathy in that Doig's mental scenery now on display is already expressed in their minds as sentimental sepia memory.
