Let's see, yesterday I got a hair cut, ate some indian curry and sold some old 90s Bon Jovi and Helloween CDs at Book Off that Miki owned for inexplicable reasons. I bought albums by Zigzo, nil and Craze while there. The selection of used cds at the Book Offs in the LA area is better. I've bought Gilles de Rais's complete discography, a Decameron cd or two, Media Youth's first album, and a couple Der Zibet cds for something silly like 30 bucks back in LA.

Visiting Book Off brings my cd purchase total up to 9 since getting to Japan. And I've still got to visit Chameleon records (semi famous Fukuoka based indie CD store) and the Tower records in Tenjin (kicks Shibuya's Tower's ass IMO) So I am likely going to have another nice stack once I'm done here. Eventually I'll have to listen to all these cds. So far I've only heard 4 of them. I could listen to one now, I guess. Since this whole post is a ploy to make me look busy so Miki's family won't talk to me and force me speak and understand Japanese. Its way too early for foreign languages right now.

Later on today, we'll head downtown and see Mucc play at Drum Be-1.

Wake Up Miki! I am out of things to do to stay busy!
Day one was fun where as day two was great.

1- heidi ain't bad per say, they just need a year or two more of song writing experience and a good producer.

Set List:
1) Tell Me (not bad, they simplified it and punked it up a little. The singer was a bit out of place for the song but I only say that because V kei singers piss me off in general.)
2) houfutsu (this song is cool stuff but all the other songs I've heard by them try and fail at being this song)
3) (song too generic and unoriginal to be bothered with)

2- Tokyo Yankees. The played four songs. Two of them were thrash punk and two were thrash metal. During the last two, a couple guys came running out holding up "muteki" flags. How classic Extasy of them, I liked it. Even if Ume-chan is gone, the guitarist and bassist did him proud by trading off vocal duties. Miki says at least one of the songs was an old Extasy song. RIP UMEMURA

3- Ladies Room. I had always avoided listening to them because I thought they'd just be dumb 80s hair metal. And thats exactly what they were, except it was good. I think I may have to check out a best of by these guys. They played four songs, one of them was Sex, Sex and Rock n' Roll. The "muteki" flag returned for them as well.

4- Dir en grey. Miscast was awesome, the rest of their stuff just all ran together and I got bored with it quickly. The last song was cool though. It annoyed me that they didn't interact with the crowd at all, they were just kinda there if you know what I mean. The younger crowd loved them but everyone else was as bored as I was after a few songs.

5- The Underneath. They got a good enough reaction for this being their first show in Japan.

Set List:
I know they played Gekkoh and Doubt (not a bad cover) but I'll have to ask Miki's Transtic Nerve loving friend to try and figure out what else they played.

6- D'espairsRay. I like them more and more each time I see them.

Set List:
1) Pose (Not my favorite cover but passable)
2) Brilliant (Sounded like an 80s anime theme song except with a big ol' pair of balls. I hope the studio version is as good sounding.)
3) SIXty NINe (My favorite song by them)
4 Mirror (Miki's favorite song by them...i think)

7- Mucc. Their sound guy pisses me off. Of course it was an outdoor stadium notorious for having bad acoustics. Maybe I should cut him some slack...nah fuck that, fire him.

Set List:
started off with the homura uta intro track as they all walked out on stage.
1) ranchu
2) fukurou no yurikago
3) noritsubusu nara enji
4) Fuzz (this song rocks hard live but usually bores me on CD)
Next, Tatsurou did a quick MC explaining how hide your face was the first cd he ever bought. He heard Dice on TV and ran out and bought a copy of the album immediately afterwards.
5) Dice (feat. TAL of The Underneath.)
6) Libra

8- Oblivion Dust. They were fun live but their sound guy also is a jack ass. I've tried my hardest to like these guys but I just can't get into them. Fake? is cool. Spin Aqua is alright. Kaz's work with Hyde is fairly cool. But OD just sound too 92-93 grunge for me too really get into.
Ken wrote in their blog that Kaz fractured his foot had had to be rushed to the hospital after they finished playing. Miki and I both noticed Kaz fall but I never guessed it was that bad.

Set List:
1) genkai haretsu (same version as on Tribute Spirits)
2-3 (didn't recognize these)
4) Radio Song
5) 24 Hour Buzz
6) Designer Fetus (the best song they have)

9- Luna Sea. If you have seen the One Night Dejavu DVD, it was more of the same. J has shaved since then. Shinya did not wear the hair extentions but it was great. I think they picked great set list. It featured a most of the favorites and then a couple suprises.

Set List:

1) Precious...
2) G
3) Dejavu
4) Slave
5) Scanner (hide cover)
6) In Silence
7) Blue Transparency
8) Rosier
9) Tonight
10) Wish
11) Up to You

10- X-Japan. They were fun. Most of the set featured old live recordings of HIDE on guitar then Sugizo shows up towards the end. Toshi's voice broke a few times even during the MC parts, leading Miki and I to believe he was probably crying a lot. I would say he was just out of practice but that wouldn't explain why he can't even talk without his voice wavering. I could have forgone some of the random interludes between songs but it was X after all, you have to expect that stuff. At one point while X was back stage everyone was clapping and the pavilion seats were all doing the wave. It was fun for a while.

Set List:
Intro: Amethyst~World Anthem,
1) Rusty Nails
2) Scars
MC
3) Silent Jealousy

hide interview footage with Forever Love..or was it Tears playing in the background and girls in the audience crying all over the place. (Some of the footage was quite old and entertaining, some of it was the footage you see everywhere.

4) Piano Solo (wow, a Yoshiki solo that I didn't want to sleep though, who would have thought it.)
5) Without You (Yoshiki on piano and Toshi on vocals. Everyone else was hiding backstage.)
6) kurenai (normally I am a Silent Jealousy type of guy but this was the best song of the night me thinks.)

It was around this point that everyone went backstage, Yoshiki came out carrying Toshi on his back. Yoshiki dropped Toshi and they both just sat on the stage for the duration of the MC.

After dropping Toshi:
Yosh- You are heavier than you use to be
Tosh- Yeah, sorry about that

They go on to announce they are playing Taiwan on Aug 2nd.

7) Endless rain (featuring typical audience singing along and continuing to sing after the band stops playing.
8) I.V. (feat Sugizo)
9) Pink Spider (V - Toshi, G - Pata, Sugizo, Yoshiki, B- Heath, D - Shinya)

The guitar Yoshiki was playing was a hide model "Yellow-Heart" guitar.

10) Believe (V - Toshi, Ryuichi, G - Pata, Sugizo, Inoran, Shinya, B - Heath, J, D - Yoshiki)

I doubt Shinya was really playing, he was just running around with a guitar, having a good time.

11) X (Muteki band featuring V - Toshi, Ryuichi, Tatsurou, TM Revolution, Hizumi G - Pata, Sugizo, Inoran, Miya, Yoshiki, B - Heath, J, D - Shinya, Yoshiki)

Also, Ladies Room, Versailles and all kinds of other poeple were waving muteki flags and leading the crowd in the X jump. Towards the end of the song Yoshiki stopped playing guitar and switched back to drums. And The showed footage of hide saying "tobe tobe tobe..." like he always does.

(PS - I hate Japanese computers.)
I have never seen so many middle aged women with pink hair in one place. It was actually kind of cool. Also the ratio of guy to girl was a lot more balanced than most shows over here.

There was a main stage, a right and left side stage. DJ OZMA, RIZE, Maximum The Hormone, TM Rev and Spread Beaver all played the main stage. Daizy Stripper, Ra:IN, Versailles, MarBell, Phantasmagoria and hurdy gurdy played the side stages.

1 - DJ OZMA. When his set started, I was a bit confused. They opened the main stage curtains and all I saw was some hide cosplayer standing there. Then I saw the pink hair was curly and realized he was DJ OZMA dressed up as pink spider era hide. At one point he let his backup singer, who is a lot more than he is, do a song while he changed into a Rocket Dive era costume. At the beginning of the last song he takes of his jacket to sing shirtless and then rips his pants off to show his yellow heart patterned boxer briefs. The best thing about the set was the pink haired dancer girls in skin tight green camo body suits during the first 3 songs of his set. The second best thing was the technopop-ified version on everfree he played. Everything else pretty much sucked.

2- Daizy Stripper started things off by ruining the hide song Misery. Seriously, hide was by no means a great vocalist, so if you can't sing his songs in tune you have no business being a singer. They also played 2 original songs that were bland pop with a tiny bit of rock thrown in.

3- Ra:IN. I am renaming this band "Pata and the Raving Lunatics" because thats what they are. They played 3 or 4 songs, and if they had a vocalist they'd really be a great band, as an instrumental band I doubt the fun of their set will translate to album. By the end of the set, DIE had destroyed a midi controller, the bass player was sawing at the edge of the stage with his bass and the drum kit had been disassembled by other band members while still being played.

4- RIZE does a pretty good cover of pink spider. Their own music isn't bad per say, I just can't get into it. They play a punk-ified hard rock and the vocalist raps every now and then. Also they can't MC in between songs worth shit. Half of the time we just had to wait while no one said anything and the vocalist dragged himself back from whatever random corner he had ran off to. He liked to jump off stage and play with the audience. Oh yeah, the singer's English is really good, I think he grew up in America.

5- Versailles. A good percentage of the audience was confused by the fags in strange costumes. Though they did sound good live and Kamijo is a better vocalist than I would have ever thought. If he has always been able to sing so good, why did he always sound all nasal and annoying in Lareine?

Set List:
1) The Love From a Dead Orchestra
2) uh...Shout and Bite, maybe?
3) The Revenant Choir

6- MarBell. Holy fuck that performance sucked the life out of me. MarBell consisted of a Japanese, slightly gothed up Avril Lavigne wannabe and a backing band that looked bored out of their mind. She didn't even look like she wanted to be there.

7- Maximum the Hormone. They were fun live, I doubt I'd ever buy a CD of theirs unless it gets released in America but I'd see them play again. The drummer chick was really funny and they just had a really nice vibe.

8- Phantasmagoria. Dear fucking god, the choreographed dance with the hands crap has got to stop. As a straight male fan of the band, I was embarrassed by it. Ugh, it made Sid's hand waving crap look like child's play. The music though was great. Jun was by far the most charismatic though Kisaki and Riku did good themselves. Iori just kind of stood there and ruined the energy of the other three members not stuck behind the drums.

Set List:
1) kami uta (a really long version of the song and their fans, some of who left after they played went crazy.)
2) gensoukyoku~Eternal Silence~ (probably my favorite song by them)

I really hope Kisaki changes his mind about not performing anymore. Hell, I hope the whole band changes their mind about breaking up. Though Iori can go away, his heart just ain't in it anymore.

9- TM Revolution. He's a good singer, his music is catchy enough, but I would have rather had him show up and play wit abs. The coolest thing about his set was miki noticed Yukke of on one of the sides hand gesturing along with all the songs. He was there with a guy neither of us recognized who was wearing sunglasses a button up shirt and bowler hat. We tried figuring out who we was but couldn't. To me he looked like he should play in a ska band so I'm calling him Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra's trumpet player. Oh he was dancing along and stuff too.

10- hurdy gurdy consisted of the Zeppet Store vocalist and an acoustic guitar. I wanted to dislike him since I never liked Zeppet Store but he did alright. He talked to the audience a lot, saying how important hide was to him, etc. He played two hide covers and one other song and honestly I think he was the perfect act to play before SB came out.

Set List:
1) LEMONed I Scream
2) ...a Zeppet Store song, I believe
3) Flame

11- hide with Spread Beaver. They used old live and studio recordings of hide vocals for all the songs and even used old hide inbetween song MCing a couple times. Most of the time they were showing old live recording or PV clips of hide on the video monitor.

Set List:
-pre recorded hurry go round video with shots of hide through out his career
-Spread Beaver introduction track as the band walks out
1) Rocket Dive
2) Pose
3) Celebration (Pata joined them for this one)
4) Doubt
5) pink spider
6) Dice
7) Everfree
8)Tell Me
-pre recorded Misery with more hide video
