Dell Profit Fall 23% on Lower Sales (WSJ.com)

Dell Inc.'s fiscal second-quarter profit fell 23% on lower computer sales, but the PC maker offered an encouraging outlook for the second half of the year.

"If current demand trends continue, we expect revenue for the second half of the year to be stronger than the first half," said Chief Executive Michael Dell.

Dell's results and outlook echo larger rival Hewlett-Packard Co., which last week posted a 19% profit drop on weakness across several key businesses but suggested that information-technology spending had turned a corner.

Boeing to Fly Dreamliner by Year-End (WSJ.com)

CHICAGO -- Boeing Co. said the much-delayed 787 Dreamliner airplane is expected to make its first flight by year-end and should be delivered to its first customer by late 2010.

The company also booked a $2.5 billion charge for the program, after customers balked at buying the first three test aircraft.

The most recent delay came in June as Boeing found structural weakness where the planes' wings join the body. Pat Shanahan, general manager of Boeing's commercial airplanes business, said Thursday that Boeing engineers have solved the problem. They will apply a "local fix" to the first 15 aircraft on the production line and incorporate a new design for future aircraft.

米バイオ燃料、ブームはすでに下火 生産能力の2/3は使われず、世界金融危機・生産能力過剰・原油価格下落・ルール改定の後れ
U.S. Biofuel Boom Running on Empty (WSJ.com)

The biofuels revolution that promised to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil is fizzling out.

Two-thirds of U.S. biodiesel production capacity now sits unused, reports the National Biodiesel Board. Biodiesel, a crucial part of government efforts to develop alternative fuels for trucks and factories, has been hit hard by the recession and falling oil prices.

The global credit crisis, a glut of capacity, lower oil prices and delayed government rules changes on fuel mixes are threatening the viability of two of the three main biofuel sectors -- biodiesel and next-generation fuels derived from feedstocks other than food. Ethanol, the largest biofuel sector, is also in financial trouble, although longstanding government support will likely protect it.

Japan on Brink of Change (WSJ.com)
Voters Will Decide How Much They Want to Alter the Fabric of Their Society

TOKYO -- In the midst of its worst economic malaise of the postwar era, Japan is preparing to oust its longtime ruling party in favor of new leaders with ambitious ideas but an untested ability to get things done.

Polls show voters in Sunday's election heavily favor the Democratic Party of Japan, an 11-year-old collection of market reformers, union leaders and consumer activists that has never held full political power. A landslide would give the group broad powers to enact an agenda that includes an elaborate domestic spending plan, tough new climate-change rules, an overhaul of Japan's bloated government bureaucracy, and a reassessment of the nation's longtime ties to the U.S.
