U.S. industrial output appears on the mend (Reuters)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. recession might be loosening its grip, data released on Wednesday suggested, although analysts cautioned recovery was likely to be long and slow.
U.S. industrial output declined at a slower pace in June and a key regional U.S. factory survey posted its strongest reading in a year this month. Another report showed core U.S. consumer prices edged up at a moderate pace in June, providing further evidence that the U.S. recession was not pushing the country toward a Japan-style deflation and stagnation.
... Federal Reserve data released earlier on Wednesday showed that U.S. industrial production fell by a smaller-than-expected 0.4 percent last month, reinforcing hopes the pace of the economy's decline was slowing, although the result was helped by strong utilities production.

White House Opposes Plan for Rejected Car Dealers (WSJ.com)
WASHINGTON -- The White House is fighting congressional efforts to force General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC to offer more compensation to more than 2,000 dealerships the car makers cut as part of their government-backed bankruptcy restructurings. A key House vote on one proposal could come as early as today.
... The White House said Wednesday it "strongly opposes" the legislation, warning it could derail the auto makers' restructuring efforts, backed by about $60 billion in government funding.
"The decision to invest taxpayer dollars into these companies required all stakeholders to make difficult sacrifices," the Office of Management and Budget said in a statement of administration policy. "It would set a dangerous precedent, potentially raising legal concerns, to intervene into a closed Judicial bankruptcy proceeding on behalf of one particular group at this point."
The White House said it shares lawmakers' concerns about the dealers, but added that it has taken steps to provide support, including a Small Business Administration program to provide guaranteed floor plan financing loans.

Rio’s iron ore output up 43% (FT.com)
Rio Tinto, the global mining company, boosted production of iron ore during the second quarter, reflecting rising demand from China.
... Rio’s iron ore division increased production to 45.1m tonnes, a 43 per cent rise compared with last quarter and an 8 per cent rise from the second quarter of 2008.
In an industry experiencing a fragile recovery from the steep drop in commodities demand, Rio reported second-quarter production figures that were greeted by some analysts as an indication that the company’s first-half financial results might be better than expected.
But its aluminium division, Rio Tinto Alcan, continued to reflect depressed aluminium demand. Production of 942,000 tonnes was 5 per cent lower than the second half of 2009 and one per cent lower than the first half of this year.

U.S. Urges China to Improve Business Climate (WSJ.com)
U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said multinational companies in China "need to have assurances and confidence" that their workers will be treated fairly, and indicated he would raise the case of a detained Australian executive with Premier Wen Jiabao in a meeting Thursday.
"We just need to continue to press" China for transparency, fair enforcement of laws and openness to foreign investment and cooperation, said Mr. Locke, in an interview in China with CNN on Wednesday.
The comments come in the wake of the detention since July 5 of the executive, Stern Hu, and three Chinese colleagues at Anglo-Australian mining company Rio Tinto.

Wal-Mart to Rate Products・Impact on Environment (NYTimes.com)
Wal-Mart, which has been venturing into environmentally sustainable products and business methods for the last few years, is about to announce its most ambitious effort yet on that front. And it wants the nation’s other retailers to take part.
The company is expected on Thursday to announce the creation of an electronic indexing system meant eventually to help Wal-Mart and other retailers determine the social and environmental impact of every product they place on their shelves.
... Wal-Mart’s enormity has long enabled it to create ripple effects throughout corporate America when it adopts new ways of doing business. Now it is spearheading the creation of a standardized electronic index that will determine how “sustainable” products are, based on their impact across the products’ life cycle. To make it happen, Wal-Mart is expected to ask its more than 100,000 suppliers to provide details about their supply chains. It will also team up with scholars, environmental and social groups, and other retailers.
In the short term, the sustainability index would be meant to give store buyers a system of measurements to help them decide which products to put on their shelves, so that determining which products are “greener” is no longer solely the consumer’s burden.
In the long term, the index will drive competition to create more sustainable products. Right now, there is no universal metric to help manufacturers make decisions based on what is best for the planet.
