Oil Demand Forecast Cut (WSJ.com)
LONDON -- The International Energy Agency made a large cut to its medium-term forecast for total world oil demand, suggesting the impact of recession and energy-efficiency efforts may help check future increases in the price of crude oil.
The Paris-based IEA said in a report it expects global oil demand by 2013 to average 87.90 million barrels a day, down 3.7%, or 3.35 million barrels a day, from its December forecast. The latest projection is a massive 6.24 million barrels a day, or almost 7%, below the IEA's 2008-13 forecast issued in July.
But the report also highlights how reduced investment and other "above ground" factors -- such as the practice of reserving the best blocks for national oil companies -- are hurting supply. That could mean much higher crude prices down the road if economic growth quickly returns to rates of more than 3%.
... From next year, oil consumption globally could grow on average anywhere between 0.5% to 1.4% a year over the next five years, depending on economic growth, the IEA said. Up until the past year, world crude demand grew by about 1.5% to 2% a year this decade.

Madoff Is Sentenced to 150 Years in Multibillion-Dollar Ponzi Scheme (WSJ.com)
NEW YORK -- Bernard Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison Monday after admitting in March to running one of the largest and longest financial frauds in recent memory.
... "Here the message must be sent that Mr. Madoff's crimes were extraordinarily evil," Judge Chin (U.S. District Judge Denny Chin in Manhattan) said.
"By giving this sentence (the judge) tried to send a clear message to victims he heard their pleas for justice," said Paul Radvany, a Fordham University law professor. The judge also wanted to send a message to would-be Madoffs "you'll face very serious consequences," Mr. Radvany said.

Fannie Sees Jump in Overdue Home Loans (WSJ.com)
Fannie Mae reported a steep increase in the percentage of home mortgages with overdue payments.
The government-backed mortgage investor said in a monthly summary released Monday that 3.42% of the single-family mortgages it owns or guarantees were 90 days or more delinquent in April, up from 3.15% a month before.
Fannie's main rival, Freddie Mac, reported last week that its single-family delinquency rate for May was 2.62%, up from 2.44% in April.
... Richard DeKaser, an independent economist in Washington, D.C., blamed the continuing rise in loan delinquencies on the spike in job losses and on what her termed the "evaporation" of home equity amid falling home prices, leaving many borrowers without a cushion when they lose their jobs.

Dell Developing Pocket-Sized Device (WSJ.com)
Engineers at Dell Inc. have been developing a pocket-sized device for tapping into the Internet, people familiar with the company's plans said.
The gadget uses Google Inc.'s Android software, these people said. Two people who said they saw early prototypes described the device as slightly larger than Apple Inc.'s iPod Touch, which is similar to the iPhone but does not have cellphone capabilities.
Another person who was briefed on the company's plans recently said Dell may begin selling the device during the second half of 2009, though this person said the plan could be delayed or scrapped entirely.
In any case, the development effort is one of the first experiments by a big-name PC maker in a nascent category of products known as mobile Internet devices, or MIDs, which are designed to fill a perceived gap between mobile phones and laptop computers.

Euro-Zone's Confidence Grows Despite Problems (WSJ.com)
BRUSSELS -- Business and consumer confidence in the 16 countries that use the euro improved for the third straight month in June, but the European Commission warned that problems persist.
According to a monthly survey by the European Union's executive arm, the overall economic-sentiment indicator for the euro zone rose sharply to a seven-month high of 73.3, from 70.2 in May.
In the U.K., which is outside the euro zone, the Commission's economic-sentiment index rose sharply for a third straight month to 68.8 in June from May's 66.1, with services confidence and consumer confidence picking up strongly.
The gains fortified evidence that the European downturn could begin bottoming out.
... In a separate quarterly report on the euro zone, the commission said problems persist in the region's economy, with financial markets still on shaky ground. Money and credit growth have slowed further in recent months, reflecting weak economic activity and some supply constraints, the commission said.
