CPI Rises Despite U.S. Recession (Forbes.com)
The U. S. economy continues to falter as companies cut back, countless Americans lose their jobs and the markets continue to be erratic, but somehow, consumer prices are rising.
The Labor Department reported Wednesday morning that the Consumer Price Index, a key indicator of inflation, rose by 0.4% in February over the prior month. Increases in energy prices were only partially offset by a drop in food costs. Economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters had expected that consumer inflation would increase a bit more moderately, by 0.3% for February--matching the 0.3% rise in January.
Some analysts would have you believe that the slight uptick in recent months of the CPI means that America has avoided the dreaded threat of deflation, but Peter Schiff of Euro Pacific Capital -- who has been bearish on U.S. economic prospects for years -- said he believes the increase is a sign that something worse is yet to come.

Oracle 3Q Net Falls 0.8% On Stronger Dollar (CNNMoney.com)
Oracle Corp.'s (ORCL) fiscal third-quarter net income eased 0.8% as the stronger dollar continued to drag on growth, but the company decided to start paying a dividend in light of its strong cash flow and operating margins.
The business-software giant's latest results topped analyst expectations, but slow revenue growth shows that tech companies still face difficult conditions. Oracle, along with rivals SAP AG (SAP) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), have trimmed their work forces as businesses have cut back on tech purchases.
While margins and recurring maintenance contracts have helped Oracle, critics complain its one-size-fits-all pricing policies might push away customers that are more sensitive about their spending. Oracle acknowledged recently it faces rising competitive pressures with pricing.

AIG's Liddy Asks Employees to Give Back Bonuses (WSJ.com)
WASHINGTON -- American International Group Inc., bowing to public outcry and harsh criticism from federal officials, has asked some of its employees to give back at least half of the controversial bonuses handed out in recent days.
AIG Chairman and Chief Executive Edward Liddy, appearing before a U.S. House subcommittee, said the company has asked employees at its financial-products division who received more than $100,000 to "step up" and return at least half the payments.
"We've heard the American people loudly and clearly these past few days," Mr. Liddy said, claiming that some employees have already volunteered to give up their entire bonus. He warned, however, that the request could backfire if the employees who received the retention bonuses decide to resign from the firm. "They will return it, but they will return it with their resignations," Mr. Liddy told the House panel.

BMW to Expand Components Cooperation With Daimler (Bloomberg.com)
March 18 (Bloomberg) -- Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, the world’s biggest maker of luxury cars, will expand joint parts purchases with second-ranked rival Daimler AG as the recession pushes the companies to reduce spending.
More “major cooperation” with competitors is possible as a way of scaling back costs, Chief Executive Officer Norbert Reithofer said at the annual news conference today in Munich. BMW’s sales will fall this year as global auto markets shrink by 10-20 percent, while a “reliable” profit forecast isn’t possible because of questions about the depth of the recession.
Joint purchases with Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz Cars unit have generated savings for BMW of as much as 15 percent, Herbert Diess, the carmaker’s purchasing chief, said at the news conference. Munich-based BMW is also taking steps to cut production by 40,000 vehicles in the coming two months, bringing the total reduction this year to 78,000.
