米ビッグ３にとって、明らかにレガシーコスト（経営とは無関係に発生する費用）が経営の重しになっています。GMとクライスラーは政府支援獲得のため2月17日までに再建計画を提出しなければなりません。
直近のコメントでUAW委員長が譲歩に前向きな姿勢を示しました。もちろんただで譲歩することはないでしょう。労働組合の委員長なので保護主義的な考えも当然あります。日本にとっては厳しい環境になりそうですね。

DETROIT -- United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger said Wednesday that an agreement to give the U.S. auto makers more cost concessions will be in place by the February deadline attending a federal bailout.
"I feel comfortable with the Feb. 17 deadline," Mr. Gettelfinger said on the sidelines of the Automotive World Congress meeting. "If that is the date we have to be there, then we will be there."

DETROIT, Michigan (AFP) — Trade reform must be a part of President Barack Obama's economic plan if the US manufacturing base is to recover from the current recession, a top union chief (United Auto Workers president Ron Gettelfinger) said Thursday.
Gettelfinger noted that the overall US merchandise trade deficit is projected at 845 billion dollars for 2008. The deficit in automotive trade alone is expected to hit 109 billion dollars and the US has an automotive trade imbalance with every one of its major trading partners, including Britain, which has a small automotive industry.

Google Inc.'s fourth-quarter net income tumbled 68% amid asset-impairment and stock-based compensation charges, but the company reported growth in revenue and U.S. paid clicks.
The company also said it would record more big stock-compensation charges in 2009.
The search-engine giant reported net income of $382.4 million, or $1.21 a share, down from $1.21 billion, or $3.79 a share, a year ago.

NEW YORK: New-home construction fell to record lows across the United States in December as claims for unemployment benefits continued to soar, the government reported Thursday, additional signs of the dire economic conditions facing the administration of President Barack Obama.
Construction of new homes fell 15.5 percent from November to December, to an annual rate of 550,000, the slowest pace on record, the Commerce Department reported Thursday.
The Labor Department reported that claims for unemployment assistance rose 62,000 to a seasonally adjusted 589,000 for the week that ended on Saturday. The U.S. unemployment rate has risen to 7.2 percent, and economists warn that the rate could reach 9 percent as the recession dragged on.

Several U.S. regional banks suffered from their exposure to construction and commercial real-estate loans and the still-deteriorating housing market during the fourth quarter.
SunTrust Banks Inc. swung to a fourth-quarter loss as credit quality continued to deteriorate and credit-related expenses again rose. The company also cut its dividend another 84% amid the uncertain economic climate.
The Atlanta bank, hard-hit by the housing crisis, posted a fourth-quarter loss of $347.6 million, or $1.08 a share, compared to year-earlier net income of $11.1 million, or one cent a share.
