08年の世界新車販売台数、トヨタが初めてGMを上回る 米市場ではGMが依然首位
Toyota Ahead of G.M. in 2008 Sales (NYTimes.com)

DETROIT - For the first time since the Great Depression, General Motors cannot call itself the world’s largest automaker. Its sales fell behind Toyota in 2008, a year when G.M. celebrated its 100th anniversary and narrowly avoided a bankruptcy filing amid a significant downturn in the economy.

G.M. said on Wednesday that it sold 8.35 million vehicles in 2008, about 620,000 fewer than Toyota’s 8.97 million. G.M.’s sales were down 11 percent from 2007, while Toyota’s declined 4 percent.

In 2008, 64 percent of G.M.’s sales occurred outside the United States, up from 59 percent the previous year. The company still outsells Toyota in the United States by a wide margin [nearly 800,000 vehicles in 2008, or 33 percent more than Toyota] but the Japanese company makes more sales in the rest of the world.

米アップル、SECが情報の開示状況を調査 ジョブズCEOの健康問題
SEC Reviewing Apple's Handling Of Jobs' Health Disclosures (Infomationweek)

U.S. regulators are reportedly reviewing Apple's disclosures about the health of Chief Executive Steve Jobs to determine whether investors were misled.

The Securities Exchange Commission probe does not mean there's evidence of any wrongdoing, the Bloomberg news service reported Wednesday. Nevertheless, investors have been frustrated with Apple's less-than-candid disclosures that have sparked rumors and led to drops in the company's stock price.

The SEC declined to comment to InformationWeek or publicly elsewhere about the investigation, which was confirmed to Bloomberg by a person the agency said is familiar with the matter.

United Technologies Net Rises 8%; ‘09 Forecast Backed (Bloomberg.com)

Jan. 21 (Bloomberg) -- United Technologies Corp., the maker of Pratt & Whitney jet engines and Otis elevators, said fourth- quarter earnings rose 8 percent on cost cuts and demand for its Sikorsky helicopters. The company repeated its 2009 forecast.

Net income climbed to $1.15 billion, or $1.23 a share, from $1.06 billion, or $1.08, a year earlier, beating analysts’ estimates by 1 cent. Sales fell 1.5 percent to $14.5 billion, hurt by currency translation, the Hartford, Connecticut-based company said today in a statement.

Results at the aerospace divisions, including Sikorsky, countered declining profit at commercial units such as Carrier. Chief Executive Officer Louis Chenevert said in December that strong backlogs would help temper the effects of a rising dollar and “rapidly deteriorating” economic conditions in the second half of 2008. More than 60 percent of the company’s sales come from overseas.

Finally, Renters Have Some Pull (WSJ.com)

As the housing downturn deepens, rental rates are falling in many major U.S. cities, including New York and Los Angeles, and tenants are finding they have greater leeway to renegotiate their leases.

Early in the housing crisis, former homeowners were starting to rent again, supporting demand for rentals. Now, with more newly constructed condos being converted into rental units, landlords are struggling to keep buildings occupied. Apartment rents nationwide fell 0.4% in the fourth quarter from the third quarter -- the first drop since 2003, according to Reis Inc., a New York City-based real-estate research company. Apartment vacancies rose to 6.6% in the quarter from 5.7% a year earlier.

In some major cities, the declines have been far steeper. In Manhattan, rents fell on almost all kinds of apartments in 2008. Rents of studio apartments fell 7.4%, and rents of one-bedrooms and two-bedrooms in buildings without a doorman fell 5.5% and 5.6%, respectively, according to a report released Tuesday by the Real Estate Group of New York, a Manhattan-based brokerage firm. In Miami, 60% of rents decreased in the fourth quarter, and 45% of rents in Los Angeles declined. Rents did buck the trend in a few cities. During 2008, rents increased 2.3% in Pittsburgh and 4.2% in Houston.
