This is the toughest retail environment that I've been a part of," Mr. Nordstrom (Erik Nordstrom, president of stores) said.
Yet he remained optimistic, noting that the retailer, founded in 1901 by his great-grandfather, has weathered other downturns, including the Great Depression. He said Nordstrom is trying to control inventory more tightly and labor costs by not replacing employees lost through natural turnover.
"Some people will choose to take a little retail therapy, and we want to be there to serve them," Mr. Nordstrom said.
