Lehman Plans to Sell Off Real Estate, Investments (WSJ.com)
Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. tried to fend off deepening gloom about its future by announcing that it will shed most of its real-estate assets, sell a majority stake in its money-management business and slash its dividend to shore up its finances after a brutal $3.9 billion fiscal third-quarter loss.
But analysts warned that the investment bank could face further losses before it can complete its plans early next year, raising questions about whether it can safely reach its goal of a smaller, less-risky profile.
Lehman rushed out its plans and quarterly results early Wednesday morning after its already-battered share price tumbled 52% Monday and Tuesday on word that talks to sell a stake in the company to Korea Development Bank had fizzled. The slide deepened questions about the firm's survival in the face of widely expected write-downs on real estate and other assets.

Ike Gains Strength Over Gulf, Takes Aim for Texas Coast (WSJ.com)
HAVANA -- Hurricane Ike grew stronger as it barreled across the warm, energizing waters of the Gulf of Mexico Wednesday toward the Texas coast after crashing through Cuba's tobacco country and toppling aging Havana buildings.
By Wednesday afternoon, Hurricane Ike had become a Category 2 storm as it fed on warm Gulf waters and made its way to Texas. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm has top sustained winds of about 100 mph and is on track to hit the Texas coast Saturday morning. The storm is about 255 miles west of Key West, Fla., and is moving toward the northwest at about 13 mph.
Ike has already killed at least 80 people in the Caribbean, and Texas put 7,500 National Guard members on standby and urged coastal residents to stock up on supplies. The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency was uncertain when it could begin evacuations along the coast.

Berkshire, in Blow to Banks, Reins In Its Deposit Insurer (WSJ.com)
Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. has told one of its subsidiaries to stop insuring bank deposits above the amount guaranteed by the federal government, dealing a fresh blow to the financial-services industry as it tries to assuage anxious customers.
The subsidiary, Kansas Bankers Surety Co., is notifying about 1,500 banks in more than 30 states that it will no longer offer a program called "bank deposit guaranty bonds." KBS is an 18-employee subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, according to the parent firm's 2007 annual report. It is one of a handful of firms that offer such insurance, a big selling point for banks trying to attract wealthy customers.
Two people briefed on the matter said the order was made Monday by Mr. Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway's chief executive. Chuck Towle, a senior vice president at KBS, declined to comment on why his firm was leaving the business. "We have decided to do so," he said. "We'll work with each individual bank and work it out with them."
