Bush Sends Aid to Georgia as Russians Occupy a City (NYTimes.com)
MOSCOW — With the fragile truce in Georgia on the brink of collapse Wednesday, President Bush announced that the United States would begin a humanitarian aid mission there and sent Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to settle the crisis.
Nerves frayed all day after a Russian tank battalion occupied the Georgian city of Gori, a move Georgia condemned as flagrant defiance of a Western-brokered agreement struck only hours earlier. Gori is only 40 miles from Tbilisi, the capital, and rumors circulated all day of a military approach on Tbilisi.
With Mr. Bush’s announcement, the United States signaled its most active involvement in a long-simmering border conflict between Georgia and Russia. Since last Thursday, the conflict escalated precipitiously into a cold- war-style standoff between Russia and the West.

NBC's Race for Ratings Gold Continues (WSJ.com)
NBC executives, the network's advertisers and its corporate bosses at General Electric Co. have been nothing but thrilled by the television ratings for the Olympics so far.
The first four nights of the Games have made these Summer Olympics the most-watched yet except for Atlanta in 1996, which Beijing is on track to beat in terms of total viewers, according to NBC. The ratings are a big vindication for the network, which invested nearly $1 billion to air an event that many thought would fall victim to competing media choices -- as most sports events, except the trend-defying Super Bowl, have.
The remaining 12 days will reveal how much of this initial success has to do with 1) Michael Phelps; and 2) Michael Phelps broadcast live, because with the swimmer, NBC has a once-in-a-generation star.

Retail Sales Fall on Soft Auto Demand (WSJ.com)
Retail sales declined in July for the first time in five months in a signal that consumer spending, a key driver of the U.S. economy, continues to weaken.
The 0.1% drop in sales of retail goods and food services, reported by the Commerce Department on Wednesday, reflected a sharp drop in auto sales. The sales declines signaled that the lift to spending from the government's stimulus checks, mostly sent out in April to July, has faded. Sales in June rose a revised 0.3%, more than previously thought.
Among the challenges facing consumers is the high cost of imports ranging from ...

Growing Farm-Equipment Sales Help Deere Post Rise in Net Profit (WSJ.com)
CHICAGO -- Deere & Co. raised its outlook for global agricultural sales Wednesday and said cost pressures had eased from earlier expectations as the world's largest farm-equipment maker reported a 7.1% rise in fiscal third-quarter earnings.
The upbeat outlook and higher margins were countered by missing analysts' profit expectations for the second straight quarter, triggering a 7.6% fall in its shares to $64.20 in recent trading.
