New home sales drop fall less than expected (LATimes.com)

WASHINGTON -- Sales of new homes fell in June for the seventh time in the past eight months, but the decline was less than had been expected, raising faint hopes that the nation's severe housing recession could be approaching a bottom.

The Commerce Department reported today that sales of new single-family homes dropped by 0.6% last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 530,000 units. That was less than half the decline that had been expected and the May performance was revised up a bit.

Some analysts said they saw cause for optimism that the worst of the decline could be drawing to a close, especially if a sweeping housing rescue package now pending in Congress can slow a flood of foreclosures and spur sales to first-time home buyers.

Chrysler to Stop Offering Leases Through Its Lending Arm (WSJ.com)

DETROIT -- Chrysler LLC has started telling dealers it will no longer offer auto leases through its lending arm Chrysler Financial, people familiar with the matter said Friday.

The move comes as auto makers and their financing units have been piling increasing losses stemming from leases, mainly as a result of falling resale values of trucks, sports-utility vehicles and other less fuel-efficient models that many consumers now shun.

Chrysler Financial is likely to see its borrowing costs rise in early August when it rolls over about $30 billion of short-term debt backed by the loans and leases it makes. That, in turn, will make it harder for the company to offer low-interest loans to buyers and for dealers to hold inventory.

June Durable-Goods Data Are Stronger Than Expected (WSJ.com)

Demand for expensive goods rose in June and consumer sentiment this month climbed, according to data yielding unexpected signs of economic strength.

Orders for durable goods climbed 0.8% last month to a seasonally adjusted $215.43 billion, the Commerce Department reported Friday.

"The trend here is, it's relatively soft but it's not horrible," said Scott Brown, chief economist at Raymond James. "It's not what we would typically see in a recession. Perhaps exports is offsetting the softness in domestic demand."

GE Cuts Number of Divisions (WSJ.com)

General Electric Co. unveiled Friday a realignment of its operations into four segments, down from six, following its decision to sell or spin off of its appliances and lighting businesses.

The conglomerate will now comprise technology infrastructure, energy infrastructure, capital and NBC Universal.

The move appears to rule out additional major portfolio divestitures that some observers have been calling for, such as the sale of NBC Universal or its health-care division.

Housing Bill Clears Final Senate Hurdle (WSJ.com)

WASHINGTON -- A massive package of housing legislation that President George W. Bush has pledged to sign into law cleared its final procedural hurdle in the Senate on Friday, leaving only a final Senate vote before it's enacted.

The solid vote in favor of the procedural motion suggests the legislation will receive overwhelming and bipartisan support when lawmakers vote to pass the measure, likely to occur Saturday morning.

If passed by the Senate, the combination of tax relief for homeowners, a new regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and a $300 billion program to avert foreclosures, would be sent to the President for his signature. The White House earlier this week backtracked on a potential veto of the bill, instead saying Mr. Bush would sign the measure.

Auction-Rate Crackdown Widens (WSJ.com)

The state of New York on Thursday joined a widening array of prosecutors and customers accusing Wall Street firms of wrongdoing in efforts to hold together the $330 billion auction-rate securities market before it collapsed in February.

State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo filed civil fraud charges against UBS AG, accusing the firm of a "multibillion-dollar consumer and securities fraud," and demanding that the firm pay back its profits from the business, make investors whole and pay damages.

A spokeswoman for UBS said, "We will vigorously defend ourselves against this complaint."
