AT&T Inc. posted a steep drop in total access lines in the second quarter, but results were buoyed by continued growth in wireless and data services.

The Dallas telecommunications company reported net income of $3.77 billion, or 63 cents a share, compared with a profit of $2.90 billion, or 47 cents a share, from a year ago. Revenue rose 4.7% to $30.87 billion.

Given current economic issues, many on Wall Street were expecting a more dire quarter. Shares of AT&T ...

Fed's Beige Book Sees Slowdown Amid Continued Elevated Prices (WSJ.com)

WASHINGTON -- The U.S. economy slowed in June and early July, while price pressures were elevated, with some manufacturers planning to charge more for goods, a Federal Reserve report said.

The Fed's summary of economic activity, known as the beige book, was released Wednesday. It was compiled by the Kansas City Fed and based on information collected through July 14. The report comes out about every seven weeks.

"Reports from the 12 Federal Reserve districts suggest that the pace of economic activity slowed somewhat ...

Arctic Contains Big Supply Of Oil, Natural Gas, Review Finds (WSJ.com)

The Arctic contains just over a fifth of the world's undiscovered, recoverable oil and natural-gas resources, according to a long-awaited review released Wednesday, confirming its potential as Big Oil's final frontier.

A report by the U.S. Geological Survey found that the area north of the Arctic Circle has an estimated 1,670 trillion cubic feet of natural gas – nearly two thirds the proved gas reserves of the entire Middle East – and 90 billion barrels of oil.

The report, the culmination of four years of study, is one of the most ambitious attempts to assess the Arctic's petroleum potential. One ...

Bush Drops Veto Threat on Housing Bill (WSJ.com)

WASHINGTON -- The White House dropped its threat to veto the massive housing bill before the House of Representatives, saying it wants to avoid a battle with lawmakers because the legislation is too important for market stability.

"This is not the time for a prolonged veto fight, although we're confident that the president would prevail in one," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Wednesday. "But with Congress scheduled to leave soon for yet another recess, the risk of not having a bill until the middle of September is not a risk worth taking in the current environment."

Chrysler to Cut 1,000 Salaried Jobs (WSJ.com)

DETROIT -- Chrysler LLC is planning to cut 1,000 salaried jobs by Sept. 30, in an effort to cut costs amid a deep slump in U.S. auto sales, according to a memo (that Nancy Rae, Chrysler's human-resources director, wrote) sent to employees.

Despite the challenging environment, Chrysler's liquidity position in the first half remained unchanged compared to December "as a result of aggressive programs to reduce working capital, the sale of non-core assets and volume related manufacturing reductions," the memo said.

Nevertheless, Ms. Rae added, "further actions must be taken to improve our business and return to profitability. In response to the continued deterioration in the U.S. automotive market, an incremental reduction in both salaried headcount and supplemental resources is, unfortunately, necessary."

Boeing's Net Declines on Charges; Jetliner Earnings Come Up Short (WSJ.com)

Boeing Co.'s net income dropped 19% during the second quarter after a charge on a troubled defense contract coincided with the delivery of a number of commercial jetliners that were sold at bargain prices during the last industry slump.

Although the results caught analysts by surprise, Boeing said it still plans to meet its projections for sales and earnings growth for 2008 and 2009, even amid growing concerns that high oil prices could lead to a wave of order cancellations.

Pfizer's Net More Than Doubles Amid Cost-Cutting Measures (WSJ.com)

Drug giant Pfizer Inc. reported an improved second-quarter profit, as international sales growth helped offset generic competition in the U.S., while restructuring charges weighed down profits at Wyeth.

Both drug makers are grappling with heavy generic competition and also heightened scrutiny of drug safety in the U.S. They are both in cost-cutting mode until their drug-research efforts begin to bear more fruit.

New York-based Pfizer's challenges are many. It derives about one-fourth of its revenue from one product, the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor, which is set to lose U.S. market exclusivity in 2011. Meanwhile, sales of other big-selling drugs are being ...
