American Airlines, Delta Post Losses Amid High Fuel Costs (WSJ.com)
AMR Corp., parent company of American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines Inc. on Wednesday reported hefty second-quarter net losses as the U.S. airline industry cuts unprofitable business to cope with killer jet-fuel prices.
Delta, the first major carrier to report quarterly results, eked out an operating profit on its healthy percentage of international flying, a bright spot generally for big airlines. But including special charges, the airline reported a net loss of $1.04 billion, or $2.64 a share, compared with net income of $1.59 billion last year.
The Atlanta carrier expects later this year to merge with Northwest Airlines Corp., ...

Sovereign funds cut exposure to weak US dollar (FT.com)
Some of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds are seeking to scale back their exposure to the US dollar in a sign of global concern about the currency.
One big sovereign fund in the Gulf has cut its dollar-denominated holdings from more than 80 per cent a year ago to less than 60 per cent, while China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) has been looking to strike deals with private equity firms in Europe as a part of a strategy to reduce its dollar holdings.
Sovereign wealth funds have played a leading role in helping to recapitalise faltering US banks, but have lost money so far on such investments. Continuing market turbulence has further shaken their faith in US policy and policymakers.

Merrill Lynch is set to sell its 20 per cent stake in Bloomberg for about $4.5bn but will retain its far more valuable 49 per cent holding in money manager BlackRock.
The sale of the Bloomberg stake back to Michael Bloomberg, the owner of the news and data service, is aimed at offsetting part of the $6bn in credit-related writedown the troubled investment bank is expected to announce on Thursday.

Inflation Surges on Energy Prices (WSJ.com)
WASHINGTON -- U.S. consumer prices soared at their fastest annual pace in nearly two decades last month, tightening the screws on Federal Reserve officials as they balance a stagflationary mix of rising unemployment, strained financial markets and rising inflation.
Even more worrisome for policymakers than the headline inflation jump may be signs that food and energy prices are starting to filter through the broader economy, as evidenced by sharp price gains last month in housing, transportation and services.
Separately, a heat wave and the end of an auto sector strike gave a lift to U.S. industrial production in June, rising ...

McDonald's Franchisee Pleads Guilty to Hiring Illegal Workers (WSJ.com)
In a coup for the government's crackdown on employers of illegal immigrants, a large McDonald's franchisee pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday to supplying illegal workers with false identification and agreed to pay a $1 million fine.
The case, which follows a worksite raid last year that swept up 58 immigrant workers at 11 McDonald's outlets in Reno, Nev., is the first conviction involving a franchisee of a major restaurant chain.
