Auto Makers Report Slump in June U.S. Sales (WSJ.com)
The U.S. auto industry's slide grew worse in June as it reached the midpoint of a dismal year marked by collapsing demand for trucks and sport-utility vehicles.
But late-month incentives helped keep General Motors Corp.'s decline in June sales to 18% drop, better than the 21% drop at Toyota Motor Corp., 28% slide at Ford Motor Co. and 36% plunge at Chrysler LLC. GM's results, well above most expectations, boosted its battered stock.
Honda Motor Co., like in May, was the lone bright spot last month with sales up 1.1% to 142,539, a record June for the auto maker. Car sales jumped 19% to 97,639, while truck sales fell 24%, much less than its larger rivals. And as they did in May, sales of the Civic and Accord cars outsold Ford's F-series pickups.

Obama Makes Call to Expand Bush's Faith-Based Programs (WSJ.com)
CHICAGO -- Reaching out to evangelical voters, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is announcing plans to expand President Bush's program steering federal social service dollars to religious groups and -- in a move sure to cause controversy -- support some ability to hire and fire based on faith.
Sen. Obama unveiled his approach to getting religious charities more involved in government antipoverty programs during a tour and remarks Tuesday in Zanesville, Ohio, at Eastside Community Ministry, which provides food, clothes, youth ministry and other services.
Sen. Obama said, "The challenges we face today ... are simply too big for government ...

UBS Sets Board Overhaul, Adopts New Governance Rules (WSJ.com)
ZURICH -- UBS AG Tuesday said it adopted new corporate-governance rules and ushered in major board changes to deflate criticism from shareholders over the clubby nature of its ranks.
The Zurich bank, which has written down over $37 billion in mortgage-securities, said four members -- Stephan Haeringer, Rolf Meyer, Peter Spuhler and Lawrence Weinbach -- are to step down on Oct. 2, when UBS will hold an extraordinary shareholder meeting to replace them.
Shareholders such as Olivant Advisers Ltd. have criticized UBS for the particularly tight relationship between board and management and pushed for changes. Spokesman Dominique Gerster confirmed Tuesday ...

Oil, Food Prices Threaten Developing Nations, IMF Warns (WSJ.com)
The jump in oil and food prices has pushed some developing countries to the "tipping point," putting governments in the difficult position of balancing the interests of the poor and economic growth, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund said Tuesday.
"If food prices rise further and oil prices just stay the same, then some governments will be unable to feed people and at the same time to maintain the stability of their economy," Dominique Strauss-Kahn said at a news conference to discuss a new IMF report on the impact on developing countries of a doubling in commodity prices ...

Investors Cheer CIT Asset Sales (WSJ.com)
Shares of struggling lender CIT Group Inc. surged as the company continues to shed assets for cash-raising purposes by reaching separate agreements to sell its home-lending business and manufactured-housing portfolio for $1.8 billion.
"These sales complete our exit from all home-lending business, removing the uncertainty surrounding this asset class and advances our strategic transformation into a company focused entirely on commercial finance," said Chairman and Chief Executive Jeffrey M. Peek.
The cost of protecting CIT bonds fell sharply after the announcement. Credit default swaps, privately negotiated contracts that allow investors to hedge credit risk, imply that it would now cost ...

Insurers Criticized For New Rate Models (WSJ.com)
Scientists say the jury is still out on whether rising sea temperatures will cause more hurricanes to hit U.S. coastlines. Yet some insurance companies are boosting premiums based on assumptions that they will. Others are withdrawing from coastal communities altogether.
Costs for homeowner insurance along the East and Gulf coasts have risen 20% to 100% since 2004, says the Insurance Information Institute, a trade group. In the three years through 2006, says the institute, property and casualty insurers registered record profits, topping out at $65.8 billion in 2006. (Despite severe U.S. weather that has caused about $8.9 billion in insured property losses to date this year, it's too early to forecast 2008 profits.)
Helping to drive these developments is a little-known tool of the insurance world: Computerized catastrophe modeling. Crafted by several independent firms and used by most insurers, so-called cat models rely on complex data to estimate probable losses from hurricanes.
