Chrysler to Cease Production At St. Louis Minivan Plant (WSJ.com)
DETROIT -- Chrysler LLC is expected to announce Monday the idling of a minivan plant near St. Louis and production cuts at other plants as U.S. sales of larger vehicles continue to falter, people familiar with the matter said.
Minivans are Chrysler's No. 1 product. The auto maker, closely held by Cerberus Capital Management LP, launched its newest minivans last fall and was hoping to nab a slew of car buyers in the spring, when many families tend to shop for the family-haulers.
However, the auto industry was caught off guard this year by a dramatic shift in consumer preference that has left scores of pickups, large sport utilities and minivans in park.

Obama Defends His Patriotism (WSJ.com)
WASHINGTON -- Democrat Barack Obama vowed never to use patriotism as a wedge issue in his contest for the White House, saying attacks on him were a result both of his own "carelessness" but more often the work of those trying to distort his background and record.
In a major speech that opened a campaign week that includes the U.S. celebration of its July 4 declaration of independence from Britain, Sen. Obama gave one of his most rousing speeches on love of country at a gathering in the aptly named city of Independence, Mo.

Bank for International Settlements Sees Economy Near 'Tipping Point' (WSJ.com)
BASEL, Switzerland -- The global economy may be close to a "tipping point" that could see it enter a slowdown so severe that it transforms the current period of rising inflation into a period of falling prices, the Bank for International Settlements said Monday.
In its annual report, the central bank for central banks said the impact of rising food and energy prices on consumers' incomes, combined with heavy household debts and a pullback in bank lending, may lead to a slowdown in global growth that "could prove to be much greater and longer-lasting than would be required to keep inflation under control."
"Over time, this could potentially even lead to deflation," it said.

Yahoo Casts Doubts on Microsoft As It Defends Board's Actions (WSJ.com)
Yahoo Inc. cast doubts about whether Microsoft Corp. was ever committed to acquiring all of the Internet portal as the company continued defending its search-advertising pact with rival Google Inc.
Amid a proxy fight for control of its board at a shareholder meeting Aug. 1, Yahoo defended its board's actions, saying Microsoft was "unresponsive" to several requests and that its actions and statements were "inconsistent," casting doubts about Microsoft's commitment to buy all of the company.
In a presentation filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Yahoo said Microsoft's proposal to purchase only Yahoo's search business made "no sense for ...

France Telecom Ends Deal Talks With TeliaSonera (WSJ.com)
France Télécom SA's pursuit of Nordic telecom operator TeliaSonera has failed, but the French former state-owned monopoly is clearly on the hunt for acquisitions, which could mean a rocky ride for shareholders.
After France Télécom withdrew its $42 billion offer because the two sides couldn't agree on a price, France Télécom Chief Financial Officer Gervais Pellissier said the company wouldn't stand by as the global telecom market is being transformed by consolidation.
"We will stay in attentive observation of the situation, and if other opportunities come up we'll definitely study them," Mr. Pellissier said in an interview on Monday.

Midwest Floods Cut Corn Acres, Will Likely Push Up Food Prices (WSJ.com)
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Farmers will harvest nearly 9% fewer acres of corn this year than last year, in part because of Midwest flooding which has damaged a portion of the crop, the government reported Monday.
The result likely will be continued high corn prices, which likely will drive up some food prices. The USDA said farmers expect to harvest 78.9 million acres, down 8.7% from the 86.5 million harvested last year. The report indicates farmers planted nearly 7% fewer ...

Firefighters Battle More Than 1,400 California Blazes (WSJ.com)
SAN FRANCISCO -- Two of Northern California's more than 1,400 wildfires choked parts of the Sierra Nevada foothills, darkening a 100-mile stretch between Sacramento and Reno with clouds of black smoke.
The fires in the Tahoe National Forest blanketed the Interstate 80 corridor linking the two cities and the foothill communities in between where tens of thousands of people live. The flames forced the evacuation of the tiny Gold Rush community of Washington.
Along the Pacific, firefighters hoped coastal fog would help them gain ground against a blaze that was just 3% contained in the storied town of Big Sur. ...

Eurozone inflation soars to new high (FT.com)
Eurozone inflation rose in June to the highest rate since the bloc’s 1999 formation, new data showed on Monday as political opposition mounted to a widely-expected move by the European Central Bank to raise its main interest rate later this week.
In its initial estimate of inflation for the month, Eurostat, the European Union’s statistical office, said prices were 4 per cent higher in June than a year earlier – twice as high as the ECB’s inflation target.
