Dear M,

We met a few weeks ago in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. I hope you still remember me, but in case you don't, I am attaching a photo of us below! 😉

I am writing to you in the hope that we might become pen-pals, but also to deeply thank you for the insights you shared during our conversation. You made my visit to Hiroshima feel incredibly human, moving far beyond hard facts and dates.

Somehow, your personal perspective and your grandfather’s story helped me understand the tragedy on a completely different level. It showed me not just the immense pain of the past, but the incredible strength of the people who rebuilt the city and continue to share the vital message: "Never again."

I still haven't watched Barefoot Gen yet—it is still on my to-do list—but as I promised you, I absolutely will watch it.

The rest of my journey took me to various places around Kyushu, including Fukuoka, Kurume, and Saga. Yet, throughout my travels, our conversation and my time in Hiroshima stayed with me. It is completely clear to me now that I will return one day—hopefully not too far in the future.

I hope you are doing well and staying healthy. I want to truly encourage you to keep up your work as a civil servant. By sharing your stories, you don't just teach history; you give it a human heart. You connect visitors to real people and real lives—both those lost and those who survived. Your work is incredibly important and valuable for our collective memory.

Sending you a warm hug from Germany!

Best regards,

D
