バイデン大統領の就任演説（Inauguration)をビデオで視聴した後、VOAのホームページからスピーチ内容を印刷して読みました。バイデン氏は78歳の高齢で、家庭面では妻と長女を交通事故で亡くし、長男を病気で失うという、かなり不幸に見舞われた人です。
副大統領のカマラハリス氏はジャマイカ出身の父とインド出身の母のもとに生まれ、米国で育った人です。これまでの経歴で女性初、とか黒人初といった様々な記録を打ち立ててきた先駆者です。
私は４年間の混乱の時代がようやく終わり、新しい時代の幕開けを期待しつつ、バイデン氏の演説を楽しみにしていました。VOAのホームページは以下にあります。時間のある方は是非原文を読んでみてください。
私が注目した箇所、内容を抜粋しました。それを以下に引用します。
まず、多くのやるべきことがあると述べています。以下のように。
Much to repair. Much to restore. Much to heal. Much to build. And much to gain.
そして多くの問題に直面していると。
And now, a rise in political extremism, white supremacy, domestic terrorism that we must confront and we will defeat.
これらのチャレンジを達成し、打ち勝つためには統合が必要だと訴えています。
To overcome these challenges – to restore the soul and to secure the future of America –requires more than words.
It requires that most elusive of things in a democracy: Unity.
続いてUnityの必要性を強調します。
Uniting to fight the common foes we face: Anger, resentment, hatred. Extremism, lawlessness, violence.
Disease, joblessness, hopelessness. With unity we can do great things.

And I pledge this to you: I will be a president for all Americans.
I will fight as hard for those who did not support me as for those who did.
バイデン氏の語りかけはさらに続きます。
We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal.
We can do this if we open our souls instead of hardening our hearts. If we show a little tolerance and humility.

So here is my message to those beyond our borders: America has been tested and we have come out stronger for it.

And together, we shall write an American story of hope, not fear. Of unity, not division. Of light, not darkness.
An American story of decency and dignity. Of love and of healing. Of greatness and of goodness.
アメリカはもう一度世界の灯台となる、と締めくくっています。
That democracy and hope, truth and justice, did not die on our watch but thrived.
That our America secured liberty at home and stood once again as a beacon to the world.
演説で述べられた考え方は、従来からバイデン氏が示していたものと同様の内容であり、特にサプライズはありませんでした。ですが、アメリカ合衆国は無事にパリ協定に復帰しましたし、米国第一主義ではなく、世界のお手本となるような行動を示してくれるのではないか、と期待できる内容でした。
これでまた一歩、世界はSDGsへ向けて大きく前進し始めたようです。
