According to the research result of NSS Labs, the Internet Explorer 9 of Microsoft dwarfs its rivals including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari in terms of its security function in blocking social engineering attacks. The independent testing company NSS Labs tested a group of popular browsers and exposed them to a series of malware targeted at European users. This company remarked that the interception rate of IE 8 has reached 90 percent. On the other hand, the latest browser released by Microsoft IE9 embraces an impressive interception rate of one hundred percent when the filtering technology of its application is activated. IE9 enjoys the most desirable performance at the current stage in terms of blocking social engineering malware. NSS Labs announced in the Web browser security report that the meaning and significance of the new application reputation technology of Microsoft cannot be underestimated. NSS Labs team put forward that the success achieved by Microsoft regarding interception rate is based on the Smartscreen URL Filter which inspects mainly the URL of the master database. The SmartScreen Application Reputation Service inserted in the IE 9 has equipped with a URL filter to block unnecessary downloading task. It offers a background context and malware scan option to help users to decide more effective whether the downloading source is reliable. Google Chrome, Firefox 4 and Safari 5 have obtained an interception rate of 13 percent in the same malware URL testing. These three browsers adopt the same engine. Users will discover when scan the list provided by the Stopbadware.org that this list contains a large number of reported phishing websites and malware websites. Although the Opera browser has adopted the security products of the endpoint security product developer AVG to block the social engineering attack, its interception rate sinks to the bottom of the list with a percentage of merely five percent. Mozilla and Google have offered no comment regarding the critic. The NSS Labs testing exposed in April the performance of these browsers on a series of 650 known malware web addresses.
