Operating in the crease
Although playing strong defense is important all over the field, it’s especially
important around the crease area. A defensive breakdown in this area, allowing
an opposing player to slip free, puts the goalie in a difficult position and often
leads to surrendering a goal. Work with your players on the following pointers:
Avoiding screens: Goalies fare better stopping the shots that they can
actually see coming toward the net, so defenders must be mindful not to
block their goalie’s vision in the net. They also must keep opposing players
from camping out in front of the crease area and blocking the goalie’s
line of sight.
Holding the sticks up: Players should keep their sticks in the air while
operating in the crease area. Because the crease and the surrounding
area are often congested, holding their sticks vertically allows your players
to move quickly and to weave between or around players more easily
than if their sticks are horizontal to the field.
Keeping up the chatter: Good communication becomes imperative in
this area. Besides the goalie letting her defenders know where they need
to be positioned, other players near the crease can alert teammates to
picks or screens that the opposition is attempting to set.Defending against the fast break
A big part of attacking in lacrosse involves creating situations in which the
offensive players outnumber the defensive players, such as in fast breaks,
which can result in some open shots on goal. One of the best indicators of a
well-coached team is how it responds in challenging defensive situations so
that the opponent can’t use fast breaks to produce goals. Whenever the
opponent has a fast-break, how the defense fares depends on key areas:
Deny the high-percentage shots. Chances are that the opposition will be
able to get off a shot; your defenders’ job is to make sure that the shot
isn’t a high-quality one. That means forcing attackers out of the middle
of the field and denying passes there, too.
Use the triangle formation. One of the most efficient formations to use
against a fast break is the triangle. This alignment features one defender
about 10 yards in front of the goal (see Figure 16-3) and a defender on
either side of him, back closer to the goal:
• The player out front at the top of the triangle is referred to as the
point. His primary responsibility is to make contact with the
opposing player advancing the ball toward the goal. His focus
should be on checking the opponent as he approaches to prevent
passes to teammates, as well as an open shot.
• The two back defenders, aligned to the right and left of the goal
post and 3 to 5 yards in front of the edge of the crease, must react
quickly to any passes. If the pass goes into the corner where the
right defender is, for example, he slides over to provide coverage,
while the defender on the opposite side of the crease shifts to the
front of the net to help prevent passes to the center of the field.
