According to study abroad consultants, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an international standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. It is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English, and was established in 1989. IELTS is one of the major English-language tests in the world, others being the TOEFL, TOEIC and OPI/OPIc.
IELTS is accepted as evidence of English language proficiency by over 9,000 organizations worldwide, including universities, employers, professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies. More than 3 million tests were taken last year.
The test has four modules – Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (11–14 minutes). Candidates are graded on a 9-band scale, with scores ranging from Band 1 (non-user) to Band 9 (expert user).
