原作はあの皮肉屋のバーナード・ショウの劇曲「ピグマリオン」です。
1956年、ブロードウェイで初演、6年6ヶ月のロングランを記録しました。
初演では「サウンド・オブ・ミュージック」で有名なジュリー・アンドリュースがヒロインのイライザを演じています。作詞・脚本はアラン・ジェイ・ラーナー、作曲はフレデリック・ロウが担当。
東京オリンピックの年、1964年に映画化され、ヒロインのイライザをオードリー・ヘップバーン、ヒギンズ教授をレックス・ハリソンが演じています。
