「トップ・オヴ・ザ・ワールド TOP OF THE WORLD」
改めて説明する必要もないほど皆さんよくご存知の曲。
作詞はリチャード・カーペンター、作曲はジョン・ベティスで1972年に発表。1973年9月17日にシングル版がリリースされました。
1973年、Billboard Hot 100において1位になり、デュオにとって2曲目のビルボード誌におけるナンバーワンシングルとなった曲です。
因みに最初にナンバーワンシングルになったのは、1970年にリリースされた「遥かなる影 Close To You」。
カーペンターズの魅力はなんといってもカレンの歌唱の素晴らしさです。惜しくも1983年、カレンは拒食症が原因で亡くなってしまいましたが、今でもその魅力は全く色褪せていません。
この「トップ・オヴ・ザ・ワールド」も色々な歌手がカヴァーしていますが、カレンの歌唱を超える演奏は未だに現れていないように思えます。
ところで、歌詞の中の「on the top of the world」は「世界の頂点」という意味ですが、無論これは「on top of the world」つまり「有頂天」（feel extremely happy and healthy)の意味が含まれています。
